Paula Deen Allegedly Asked Black Staffers to Dress Like Aunt Jemima

You see here's the thing - Paula Deen didn't start a business until 1991 - less than 30 years ago. So she didn't have any employees before that. If you looked at the article, there is a picture of a black employee in front of the Lady and Sons restaurant (founded in 1996), doing exactly what she is alleged to have asked the employee making allegations to do.

Now
my recollection of the 1990s is not that of a time in which the n-word was considered appropriate.

It wasn't.

A man that I worked with in the oilfield at that time in Southeast Louisiana was fired for using that word. That is a fact.

All this stuff about porn and sexually inappropriateness......

She must be a "creepy ass cracka"

Paula Deen is a creepy ass cracker. But this isn't about that is it?

Im sorry, I don't think I would want to work with an old lady watching porn and talking about sex.

I'd be a little creeped out.

That was what my comment was about......... the other was a bit of humor.

Maybe we should outlaw all re enactments of the annual battle at Gettysburg also because they are period centric? How foolish you people that want to project, and inject racism into everything today look.

Paula Deen Allegedly Asked Black Staffers to Dress Like Aunt Jemima - Yahoo! TV

Conservatives: She isn't racist.
Liberals: Of course she's racist.
Libertarians: You don't have to work for her if she's racist.
Independents (with Conservative lean): This isn't racist because she asked nicely.
Independents (with Liberal lean): You guys kidding right?
Other & Unknown: Unintelligible post.
Zyphlin: 6,300 word essay.

I did enjoy Fox News' take on this.

I genuinely did. They basically hammer out what is so wrong with this entire situation. The problem isn't so much her use of racial epitaphs. It's the entire culture which she allowed to exist in her place. Porn at the work place? Racial attacks? Homophobic remarks? If your boss is willing to use racial epitaphs, have plantation styled weddings, dress her workers as Aunt Jemima, that's not something which stops 20 years ago unless a person can show a track record of having changed. Paula Deen just seems to have been doing the same **** for 20 years and hoping nobody caught on.

The Food Network did what any business would and should do with people like this. Let them cater to racists if they want on their own platform, works for Glenn Beck.

Paula Deen is surrounded by a team, dependent upon her for their livelihood, who are supposed to protect and advise her. Complete fail. She also admitted, according to the video, to making jokes about Jews and other ethnic groups. Allowing pornography in the workplace, and a host of other distasteful behaviors. WTF??

Where was her team? Did she surround herself with airheads? I don't blame The Food Network or any of her other sponsors for dumping her. Very poor judgment and completely unacceptable behavior.

I was listening to a discussion among family, and one guy (75 years old) said that anyone who says they've never used "The N Word" is a liar. I find THAT offensive. I've never used racial slurs in my life.

Being honest, I can't say the same. As a kid, I may have used it, but as I grew, and matured one rationally, and quickly learns that the type of disdain one must hold in ones heart to constantly keep up that sort of hatred is just mentally exhausting, and not what educated people believe, or perpetuate....It is counter productive.

I see a lot these days that surprise me to no end.

You're probably right...Nothing like trashing a business woman over a possible (not verified) statement she made some 30 years ago to take the eye off the incompetence in DC.

Um, you really think this is just about her making one statement 30 years ago? You think that's all there is to it?

No, we should of course make excuses and pretend like there's no longer any such thing as racism.

Unless it's done by black people. Then we'll take everything anyone with dark skin says that is even aware that there is such a thing as race, and blow it up into the biggest deal ever.

I think you are full of it.

Strangely.... that is what the media is doing, but in reverse.

I think you are full of it.

Why? I think that says a whole lot more about you than me -- just as it does my brother-in-law. (Not REALLY my BIL, 'cause Tom and I aren't married, but close enough.)

Yeah. I am honest, you aren't.

You just can't believe that some people choose not to use racial slurs, can you? I don't call women ***** either.

Damn word censor. Now I want to know what you don't call women....

If you're talking about her use of the n-word, she verified it herself. Also, she's being trashed for much more than making a single statement. That's not to say that this story should be covered as much as it is, but you've got your facts wrong.

Isn't Aunt Jemima a pancake mix? Is it a racist pancake mix? I bet black people use it.
Aunt Jemima - in certain contexts - is the female version of "Uncle Tom". It's just lesser known although I'm assuming it's more well known in the South? A black woman dressing up as Aunt Jemima for a white woman is not a good look.

There was a rather extreme amount of focus and reaction to that particular incident. And given the context of it, it did strike me as extremely bizarre and unreasonable. But the storm was brewing long before that and it could have simply been the straw that broke the camels back

I think it has been brewing awhile. People in Savannah don't care for her because she makes the city look trashy. Like everybody acts the same way she does. She got on a nighttime talk show once and talked about defecating in her driveway, and laughed that cackly laugh like it was the funniest thing he had ever heard. Most everybody just looked at each other, like, "What did she just say? Did she really just admit to that on national TV?"

2. I'm slightly annoyed because - before this mess - I wanted to go to her restaurant. Now, it's not going to happen because I'm not going to spend money on such a mess.

I've been. It wasn't worth the wait.

I refused to go to her restaurant because I just hate the woman. I went to Bubba's Oyster House, and the food was phenomenal, but way overpriced. WAY overpriced. I always said I'd go back, until I read those depositions. Now I feel differently. I live on the coast. I can get good grilled oysters at about a dozen different places, and I'd feel much better about my money going to someone that wasn't such a pig.

We went to Bubba's too. Loved it.
