UK wants to restrict access to online porn

Saying that "the darkest corners of the Internet" pose a real threat to children, British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday rolled out a plan that would, by default, block pornography on most computers, smartphones and tablets.

British wireless and Internet providers have agreed to put adult-content filters on phones, public Wi-Fi networks and home computers in the coming months. By the end of the year, the filters will become the default setting for anyone setting up broadband Internet service at home, Cameron said.

In my opinion, this is pretty pathetic. Is it really too much to ask that parents take responsibility for keeping their children out of things that they should not be getting into? With a little effort, access to porn sites can be restricted by the computer administrator (which should be the parent). If they are not tech savvy, many programs and services that prevent access to certain types of websites are readily available.

It won't work. It doesn't work in China and it won't work here. Anyone with a proxy or VPN that masks their IP as a foreign address will give them access to the goods.

I do think that porn causes some social problems, but it's not up to the prudes in government to censor the whole internet. Child porn laws were the gateway to governmeny spying online. No more concessions. If they can crack down on porn then it will give them more mechanisms of control. Besides, as I already mentioned, it won't work.

Government needs to let go, not tighten its grip. Pun intended.

Porn is not a threat to children. Why won't this stupid **** die? Why is it that every once in a while we get a bunch of prudes that are scared of porn taking steps to restrict it's access? Just go the hell away and learn that the human form and human interaction is not something to be scared of. Idiots.

The French are much better but also much more racist and offensive which is not necessarily a bad thing.

I could maaaaybe understand it if it was opt-in, but this is just ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if they're confirmed or notified very publicly when they opt-out. They're trying to count on men being too timid to opt out of the program due to the backlash they'll get from their gf's/spouses.

Another win for the nanny state.
