Former Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter Liz Cheney will run against Wyoming's senior U.S. senator in next year's Republican primary, her campaign said Tuesday.

Liz Cheney, 46, is the elder of Dick Cheney's two daughters. Her announcement is a political challenge unlike anything Wyoming has seen for years, maybe decades.

Republicans in the state rarely challenge incumbents of their own party in national office. All three members of the state's congressional delegation and all statewide elected officials are Republican.

Liz Cheney is married and has five children. She hasn't been a longtime Wyoming resident but she and her husband bought a home in the posh northwest Wyoming community of Jackson Hole last year.

"I am running because I know, as a mother and a patriot, we can no longer afford simply to go along to get along. We can't continue business as usual in Washington," Cheney said in a statement.

Meanwhile, apparently aware that Cheney's announcement was imminent, Sen. Mike Enzi announced his bid for a fourth term. He made the announcement more than six months earlier in the political cycle than he has in the past.

"Working behind the scenes — this is what I have been doing since I was elected and this is what needs to be done," he said by email through his spokesman.

The race promises to be hard-fought. Enzi has had few serious Democratic opponents — much less Republican ones — and remains well-liked as an affable former shoe salesman and mayor of the coal-mining city of Gillette.

Enzi takes pride in keeping a lower profile and remaining much less partisan than most of his colleagues. He often refers to his "80-20" rule — that opposing parties usually can agree on 80 percent of the details of any given issue — as a model for Republicans and Democrats to work together.

Enzi handily won re-election in 2008 with more than 75 percent of the vote.....snip~

ok what did Enzi do to potentially upset conservatives and make them go through a bloody primary.

i thought Dick cheney and Senator Enzi were political allies and friends?

Beats me.....look at what she is saying. She knows as a Mother and Patriot we can no longer afford to simply get along. She knows Enzi is an 80-20 guy anyways when it comes to dealing with Democrats. So what does she mean by this?

She isn't talking about just Republicans.....IMO.

I have to say that I've never heard of Senator Mike Enzi on any matter - period. Apparently, he's been taking up space and simply breathing in the Senate for about 18 years now and wants to go for a shot at the quarter-century club. But why?

I wish Liz Cheney well - she's clearly a very intelligent, articulate, confident woman and one that would likely make a great contribution to the Senate - Senator Enzi won't be missed since no one even knows he's there.

Does Wyoming have a sore-loser law? These are generally written by Repub legislatures for obvious reason. Gaining 6 seats with no losses will be so easy, eh, just as in 2012 and 2010!!

Incumbents have the luxury of usually retaining their seats with not a whole lot of trouble, especially when the sitting politician wants to just coast through without any meaningful stand. We don't need leeches in office these days.

The entire state of Wyoming has fewer people than most Americans' congressional districts. It shouldn't be that huge of a challenge for her to overcome the power of incumbency.

Not every senator is a media-seeking firebrand.

I guess Enzi just prefers working behind the scene in committee and senate matters rather then make headlines.

Liberals love it when Republicans are quiet, and mushy.....

If Repubs gain the Senate in 2014, Obama can veto them for 2 years, even if Repubs go nuclear--unlikely IMO. And here's why. They have 20 seats to protect out of 34, won in the "wave" year though they are strong in those states. And, a POTUSA election year could add up to trouble.

Probably nothing.
Let's face it, being a senator rocks.
You only have to run every six years and the pay is pretty good.
Liz may have her own problems with the base, though.
She is on record supporting--gasp!-- Obama's drone strikes.
On the bright side, she wanted the drone strikes used in concert with enhanced interrogations.
So....she wants terrorist suspects tortured and then, blown up.
Or blown up and then tortured....whatever.
That should work with the base.;)

Fair enough - but he's had 18 years to do that already. Don't you think that in 18 years a Senator should have some significant legislation he's championed or worked on that has garnered support in his own party or with the entire Senate? If he wants to be a bureaucrat, let him apply for a behind the scenes desk job.

since liberals have no one who can challenge Enzi in the first place, this just means the republicans get to switch who represents them.

i never said i liked Enzi, i was just arguing that senators don't have to be media-hounds or glory seekers. i am just surprised what Enzi did to anger conservatives..

No, not media hounds, or glory seekers, but as CJ said, maybe he should have done something in his term other than collect a paycheck?

Christ in heaven! The only way to keep political dynasties from recurring in the US is for the public to stop supporting this bull****. Sadly, I am afraid far too many voters will vote for some name they know.

No more Bushes, no more Clintons, no more Kennedys, no more Pauls, no more Cheneys. We can do better.

Senate Repubs took a pass on the opposite of your passage. Dems set precedent by accepting NO recess appointments, by pulling those two and ending a stupid legal battle. Today was a good day for the Nation. Time for the House to get off it's TUSH and take New Real Action.

One would think that, but hey, my state has had Barbara Boxer as a senator for 20 years.
I'm beginning to think a Senator's job is mostly ceremonial with a dash of pork.

Remember, that's "Senator Barbara Boxer" - you're not allowed to use her name without the honorific preceding it. Remember, "she worked damn hard to be called Senator". She's also worked damn hard to be called a lot of other things that DP's rules don't allow me to list.

She'd go a long way in making the GOP look worse than it already does. She may be about two IQ points smarter than Palin. Her positions are pretty much, whatever sounds toughest and angriest towards the rest of the world. She's definitely an "I'm so scared I wet my pants" conservative who can't be afraid enough and therefore the world is a nail and she is the hammer... so long as she doesn't have to do the dirty work she'll be all too willing to donate the lives of everyone else in the USA to all the war causes she'll back. She's definitely her daddy's little girl.

Now this I like.
It's much better than the cliched "neo-con chickenhawk" or the overly verbose "chicken little sky is falling conservative".
Good job, young man!

So because you have not heard of him he has not done anything? Do you have any idea how ****ing stupid that is? And how do you, a Canadian, feel qualified to judge whether his constituents will miss him? You know, the people who voted him in by a 3 to 1 margin last election?

Good on her. No doubt I differ from her on many positions, but I respect the family.

Where do you have to be from in order to judge politicians? Is it all a local thing?

I believe in your old days as a moderator, we'd refer to your post as baiting - you're hitting a couple of prime high notes in the baiting hall of fame - criticizing intelligence, xenophobic attacks on nationality - well done. Rather than run to mommy and report you, I'll simply respond in kind.

A liberal in Georgia naturally knows more about Wyoming politics, right? Do you know how ****ing stupid that is? Of course, being a liberal, you see nothing wrong with spending a career sucking on the teat of government and accomplishing nothing. That's the liberal career of choice. Your role model must be Barbara Boxer.

As for winning by a margin of 3 to 1, that simply says that the Republican candidate in Wyoming is going to win in a landslide, even if it's Mike Enzi. If Liz Cheney gets the nomination and wins by a 3 to 1 margin in 2014 or a greater margin, according to you that would mean she should hold the seat for life, right?
