U.S. taps half-billion German phone, internet links in month:

BHO is on the right side of the NSA-Snowden kerfluffle. My hypocrisy meter was in the red zone all day hearing the Euros' comments.

LOL ... But what should he be charged with? Technically, I don't think it's treason. Espionage? Is there anything the NSA can do to make this happening again much less likely? These Euros ... I tell you, you can't live with them, you can't live without them ...

one more thing Jack ... from your experience, what do you think is and isn't appropriate for the NSA or other gov't entity to do to protect us ... serious question ...

I suspect they'll start with treason and use it as leverage to plea bargain "down" to a loooong prison sentence.

There is almost no way to have that discussion in this forum. My short, unclassified answer would be "a lot."

I'm still floored that you espouse personal liberty in your signature yet are willing to give so much of it away in the false name of security.

Defense of the nation does not require offense against our privacy. Unless you buy this "terrorism is a new paradigm" nonsense.

A razor's edge, or the stroke of a keyboard, however you choose to look at it :)

USA USA USA

Yeah baby!

Obama is the most brilliantest, bestest president evah!

He does almost everything to perfection, to question him is to admit insanity.

Just like GWB! Such amazing people they are.

Side note: hmm, what country should I move to?

Reality: everywhere sucks

Alternate reality: the USA is truly going to become a hell-pit the likes of which has never been seen. Perhaps I should just take a temporary down-grade and evacuate?

I would hope that being very close US allies inside NATO would mean something.

But it's not like the US govt is not doing it to their own citizens ...

With Germany's track record, it's a wise investment to keeo an eye on them.

So the rest of the NSA is made up entirely of criminals? He's the only "conscientious citizen" among them?

No, this is an attention whore not happy where his life was headed. There were far better ways to do this, and he chose the instant celebrity route.

Well, no. Thomas Drake and a handful of others going back several years have done this, and it was covered in the MSM. Perhaps you have some form of selective amnesia that makes you forget those other brave men and women. Colleen Rowley and Sibel Edmonds, on the women's side. ;)

I'm sure there are many good individuals within the Borg, but they are very much intimidated by the prosecution of Manning, Drake, Snowden and a few others.

And our leader Da Prez, states catagorically it is OK, this is what all other governments are doing. Bill Press the liberal said on his morning show we should then simply torch the Constitution.

America!! America!!!!!! MerikA!!!!! MERIKA!!!!!

F yeah....

So who is going to defend this (if it proves to be true)?

This is proof that reporters are pretty incompetent when it comes to anything technical. They're also terrible at math.

Merits aside, the US did not *tap* 500,000,000 individual phone calls, emails, and text messages in Germany. That's about 120,000k per second. The terrorism watchlist has about 100,000,000 members on it. It's conceivable that a modern data centre could check a few parameters about the connections with a few parameters on the terrorism watch list, but only a few. And it would still be a pretty sizable achievement to acquire and store that much data.

There are a lot of other people on the internet who gather much more information than the US government.

The relevant news report can be found at: NSA Spied on European Union Offices - SPIEGEL ONLINE

If this information is accurate, it is deeply troubling. It is difficult to imagine that bugging EU diplomatic offices serves any legitimate counterterrorism purpose. This is a matter that Congress should investigate thoroughly with the findings made public, as it involves possible activities directed against longstanding strategic U.S. allies. At the same time, should Congress find credible evidence of such activities, it might be useful for Congress to act to suspend the entire program until its scope, breadth, and targets are fully identified and adequate safeguards can be put in place.

The thing is that they don't have to know a lot of what goes on in these offices it's just that they want to know it and can know it. So from their point of view, why not? No one will know anyway.

All this does is to further embarrass the bureaucracy, and a good thing too.

That's a good point but, like the Japanese, they have long memories of the returns recklessness can bring. We can just accept their perceived superiority and otherwise ignore them.

Guy in Verizon commercial: "Can you hear me now?"

NSA: "Yes we can."

I don't argue with tools. You're a lost cause that I don't care to engage. Ignore me, and I'll do the same your way.

So, nothing to contribute then? Make up wild **** and run.

Being a ham radio guy, I realized when I read the headline that "taps phones" was a figure of speech, and NOT a literal phrase.

Off Topic: I was always curious about getting into that, all I have is a handheld transceiver (Baofend UV-5R) to two-way with my brother. I'd love to mess with something with real range, but wouldn't even know where to get started or licensed.

Actually, I've let my license lapse because I no longer transmit. I still listen but don't transmit anymore.

ARRL, American Radio Relay League can help you prepare for the license and take the written. Good luck! :)

Does anyone think that the information is shared with US headquartered Multi-National Corporations for business advantages. I think the major banks and corporations are the beneficiaries of this spying. I don't think our gov't should be allying with Korporate Merika. Think no-bid contracts, Iraq and Halliburton. Think billions of dollars unaccounted for by Paul Bremer during his reign in Iraq. Jus' bidness, or is that just a Texas expression?

The record's stuck, the record's stuck, the record's stuck.

I will assume it is true. They are not Americans and therefore are not entitled to the privileges and protection of American citizenship, so screw them.

That is pretty simple enough to defend. Now, it would be nice if Americans were to receive the privileges and protections of their citizenship in this regard, but that is wishful thinking thanks to George and Barack.

But President Obama was going to make the world like us again. Oh my, what went so horribly wrong?
