If this information is accurate, it is deeply troubling. It is difficult to imagine that bugging EU diplomatic offices serves any legitimate counterterrorism purpose. This is a matter that Congress should investigate thoroughly with the findings made public, as it involves possible activities directed against longstanding strategic U.S. allies. At the same time, should Congress find credible evidence of such activities, it might be useful for Congress to act to suspend the entire program until its scope, breadth, and targets are fully identified and adequate safeguards can be put in place.
The thing is that they don't have to know a lot of what goes on in these offices it's just that they want to know it and can know it. So from their point of view, why not? No one will know anyway.

All this does is to further embarrass the bureaucracy, and a good thing too.

That's a good point but, like the Japanese, they have long memories of the returns recklessness can bring. We can just accept their perceived superiority and otherwise ignore them.

So, nothing to contribute then? Make up wild **** and run.

Merits aside, the US did not *tap* 500,000,000 individual phone calls, emails, and text messages in Germany. That's about 120,000k per second. The terrorism watchlist has about 100,000,000 members on it. It's conceivable that a modern data centre could check a few parameters about the connections with a few parameters on the terrorism watch list, but only a few. And it would still be a pretty sizable achievement to acquire and store that much data.

There are a lot of other people on the internet who gather much more information than the US government.
Being a ham radio guy, I realized when I read the headline that "taps phones" was a figure of speech, and NOT a literal phrase.

Off Topic: I was always curious about getting into that, all I have is a handheld transceiver (Baofend UV-5R) to two-way with my brother. I'd love to mess with something with real range, but wouldn't even know where to get started or licensed.

Actually, I've let my license lapse because I no longer transmit. I still listen but don't transmit anymore.

ARRL, American Radio Relay League can help you prepare for the license and take the written. Good luck!

    America!! America!!!!!! MerikA!!!!! MERIKA!!!!!

    F yeah....

So who is going to defend this (if it proves to be true)?
Does anyone think that the information is shared with US headquartered Multi-National Corporations for business advantages. I think the major banks and corporations are the beneficiaries of this spying. I don't think our gov't should be allying with Korporate Merika. Think no-bid contracts, Iraq and Halliburton. Think billions of dollars unaccounted for by Paul Bremer during his reign in Iraq. Jus' bidness, or is that just a Texas expression?

That is pretty simple enough to defend. Now, it would be nice if Americans were to receive the privileges and protections of their citizenship in this regard, but that is wishful thinking thanks to George and Barack.

But President Obama was going to make the world like us again. Oh my, what went so horribly wrong?
