I'm not at all interested in using Bing in any form. I know and love Google and I'll continue to use that. Not one person was asking for the return of the start button, we want the start MENU back. There are those of us who know our file systems, have no problem managing them - LET US! Libraries and file system obfuscation from the user are the wrong way to go after more than a decade or two of user education in file system management.

Hell no.. dislike all you want that is your problem.

But dont come here and say that it is because of supposed non existent start menu that no one really used in previous versions of Windows. That is nothing but a lame excuse... what is the real reason? Are you an Apple fanboy? Linux nerd? Or just hate Microsoft? There must be some reason since blaming a "start menu" issue is overblown and totally irrational, since the start menu is still there... it just looks different.

Or do you just hate the metro look and feel on a desktop? Fine that is rational... I dont like aspects of it that is for sure... but guess what... then dont use it.. no one is forcing you to use it.... and I rarely use it.

Just saying... much of the hate against Windows 8 seems overblown and irrational and often comes from people who praise Apple oddly enough...

Not saying there is no start menu, saying that it does not function as nicely as it used to in previous versions, that it is less convenient and less appealing. The problem is not that people are not explaining their complaints, it is that you refuse to understand them and claim it is something else.

The start menu is there.. it is just full screen now and much more functional. Pressing the Windows key in Windows XP to 7 brought up the start menu... guess what, it also works in Windows 8.. and is full screen now. Or do you want a small start menu in one corner.. is that all you want? Do you hate change? Did you complain each time when they changed the start menu from Windows95/98/Windows 2000 to XP and XP to Vista and Vista to 7? It grew and grew!

And the file management system in Windows 8 is no different than in Windows 7... or Vista.. and in most cases... Windows XP.

WTF are you talking about? Does not function as nicely? Explain. I am really trying to understand the issues people have... but no one is even remotely attempting to explain them.. they just say no start menu/button and that is utter bull****.

What exactly has changed other than it is now a full screen version? Now the appealing part I can understand, but that supposedly is changing in 8.1, but less convenient? Being able to search directly by just starting to type is less convenient than having to press the search box first before you can type? Being able to search directly in apps, files and online from the same search function? Less convenient that you can now see if you have mail? Less convenient that your contacts are not tied into the most popular forms of communications? How is the new menu less convenient? You can even customize it as you want.. something that was pretty hard in the old start menu..

Tell me, I am just trying to understand why so many people have problems with with Windows 8..

    Hat tip to Mycroft:

How to download the Windows 8.1 Preview Free Today | News | TechRadar

The update "blends the desktop and the modern experience," Ballmer said, and includes the return of the start button (though not the Windows 7-style Start button that some people wanted), a boot-to-desktop option, and more.

In our hands on review, we found that while the interface tweaks may not appeal to everyone, the performance improvements should do, as Windows 8.1 feels feels generally snappier, even for simple tasks like compressing files.

But why take our word for it when you can download the Preview edition of the Windows 8.1 update free today? Here's how...

Head over to the Windows 8.1 Preview page Windows 8.1 Preview - Microsoft Windows
and click 'Get it now' and you'll download a Windows patch which, when installed, gives you an option to go to the Windows Store to download Windows 8.1.
You can then download and install the update in the background."..."

Then explain what is less convenient? That is a function based complaint, not a visual based complaint like "less appealing".

I am still and XP user here. Will push on with what I have until there just is no way out of it any longer.

Then you're missing out. Personally, I have my main work computer using Windows 7 Ent, and all casual computing using Windows 8 Pro. In my office I actually swap out my desktop with the Win 8 box when I want to game, or anything else in a tablet type function. All of my computers except my main work computer are running Windows 8, and the kids are using both Apple iPad, and various Tablets running Windows 8 RT. I must say that from a performance standpoint, Windows 8 is faster than Win 7, but not by a huge noticeable margin, but it does feel faster. Maybe that's because on the 8 boxes they're not cluttered up as much as my main work computer, who knows? The truth from this users pov is that when I need to work, I use Windows 7, when I want to play I use Windows 8.

    Thanks Tim.

But for now this has most I need to work. I have gaming consoles to play with (XBox). Not much to gain from using higher Windows platforms.
