Democratic lawmaker hits justice as ‘Uncle Thomas’

Is anyone going to claim that the intent of calling Thomas an Uncle Tom was anything other than: "Thomas is a shameless sell-out who identifies so much with the rich and powerful, mostly white, elites that he is willing to make decisions that harm his own oppressed people."

If so, what do you think he actually meant?

Do you really have to ask? Especially after observing him for how many years now? He got one of the lowest ratings by the ABA and was approved only after the Bush administration pressured the ABA to give him a mid-level rating and went after them as partisan. A lot of pressure, and I suspect that the ABA was also reluctant to turn away a black nominee.

Yes, I have to ask, because his service on the SCOTUS has been quite sound.

Race matters but it seems to me that Blacks are being cast as marginal members of society if there are laws designed exclusively for them, and that would include affirmative action laws as well. Anyone who believes Black people need special laws or attention designed exclusively fr them has to believe in racial inferiority as well. You cant have one without the other.

I think Black people would feel far better about themselves and their culture if they knew that the playing field was level, just as it is for others and just as many successful Black people have demonstrated.

Would people in wheel chairs feel better about themselves if they had to use the stairs like everyone else? and, yes, blacks would feel better if the playing field was level ... the point is that it isn't, so we have to try to level it in numerous ways, just as we did for white women with affirmative action (they were the primary beneficiaries of it) ... this doesn't mrean one believes in blacks' inferiority ... rather it means that one believes racial discrimination exists ...

What exactly is blacks' culture?

self-hating, not terribly bright, slave mentality themselves trying to please whites? there are many possibilities ... can't tell, not enough data ... What does it say about the folks they're talking about?

lol so predictable cant address the message cant discredit the message so attack the messenger
your a racist for thinking if a Black Man doesn't agree with Liberal policies if they don't tow the line they are self hating, Blacks are not allowed to think for them selves they are not allowed to realize they are slaves on the democratic plantation

Racial discrimination certainly exists if the laws are different for one race than another. In fact that's the essence of racial discrimination. Justice Thomas was not alone in finding this wrong. There were four others who decided the same way.

In fact some of the worst examples of racial discrimination, and hatred, have been against Justice Clarence Thomas but he has few, if any, liberal defenders.

so all Blacks need to be democrats other wise they are Uncle Toms?

You are a racist

I don't know what they would have to be, but it would certainly not be the party that is just socialism away from being the neo nazis.

A very reasonable question. What are your thoughts?

that they're all easily manipulated, can't think for themselves ... as long as the GOP is perceived (and is) anti-government, they'll do poorly among blacks ... it was the federal gov't that stepped in when states denied blacks rights ... they still feel that they need the gov't to protect them ... after what the Sup. Ct. did to aid states to stop them from voting, they're more likely to vote Dem hoping one or two of the con Justices dies or leaves for some other reason and a Dem president appoints a lib judge(s) ... also, if a lib judge leaves, they'll want a Dem pres. to replace her/him ...

yeah, who better than you to decide who is a racist ... LOL ... this post made my day ... I laughed out loud on that one T ...

Grant, I don't know how else to explain it to you ... let me think about it and I'll try again later ... have a good night ...

No. What gave you that idea? But when you're black and you vote to gut the voting rights act, don't be surprised if someone calls you an Uncle Tom.

It wasn't "gutted" it was sent back to be updated with current statistics so it makes sense.

His written opinions generally get very high marks, even from those who disagree with him. You would profit from more diversity in your reading.

we all would Jack, we all would ...:rock

they know what the House Republicans are ready to do (and not do) ... it was gutted my friend (but I'm not giving up hope completely) ... we're already seeing what states are doing ... just saw a report that Texas came up with a voter suppression plan aimed at Latinos that the feds stopped, but now they can go with it ... according to the state's own stats, what they have planned will affect 4% and some change of whites and over 10% of Latinos ...

Thanks for your offer, Windowdressing, but rather than an explanation for laws favoring different races, perhaps you can outline your support for their worthiness. I cannot see how racist laws have improved conditions for Black people in the United States but am willing to be proved wrong..

For most of our history laws favored whites. so we passed laws, executive orders were issued, and the Sup. Ct. rendered decisions to change that, i.e., we took steps to end de jure or legal segregation and other forms of discrimination. But because the harm was so great for so long, we took steps to remedy past wrongs the effects of which are still felt today. For example, when you deny blacks education, access to the best jobs, etc., that's a disadvantage that is passed on to the next generations, just as advantage is. So, let's take affirmative action ... it was a response to institutional racism and it required employers to take extra steps to make sure they got a good pool of minority and female applicants ... in the end, the best candidates got the position. As far as voting was concerned, the feds took steps (remember, this was renewed several times, the last time in 2006 - bipartisan support) to ensure that certain states were not doing anything to prevent blacks from voting. There was evidence that some were, which is why certain areas were targeted ... in fact, more recently, Texas tried to pass a law that would have a disparate impact on Latinos in the state (it would prevent 10% of Latinos from voting and only 4% of whites from voting) and the feds stopped them ... but now they can go ahead with it ... Does this help? It was a little rushed, but I hope it does ...

It is humorous how any effort to ensure people are eligible to vote is deemed 'suppression' by the left. Please tell me why it is wrong to validate eligibility?

You and I know what they're up to Woodman ... the GOP knows it is in trouble given the demographic changes that are taking place -- voter suppression is one of the few choices they have ... Texas's voter I.D. law was barred by a federal court in 2012 because it would curtail the ability of minorities to vote, but now they can proceed ... we'll see how all this plays out in the long run ... I think the GOP is being shortsighted ...

... i am required at many times to provide identification before obtaining services for various things far less important than voting. I would not hesitate to provide it at the polls and never understood the objections to doing so. and you didn't answer my question.

Definition of UNCLE TOM

1. A black who is overeager to win the approval of whites (as by obsequious behavior or uncritical acceptance of white values and goals)
2. A member of a low-status group who is overly subservient to or cooperative with authority

How is this racist again? Oh I get it, if progressives point out the truth about how racism messes with the mind of people like Thomas, it's racism. Denouncing the effects of racism is racism.

Jesus, conservatives are dense.

Since your number 2 point applies directly to you, I guess it isn't racist after all.

It is only a silly statement to those who disagree with the premise---If a black man acts like a white man and does not honor his own people, he is considered to be an Uncle Tom---so, like I said..if it quacks like a duck, it is a duck....It is certainly not the first time that Clarence Thomas has been called an Uncle Tom.....

I thought "his own people" were all Americans, I guess I was wrong.

I did ... you're just not getting it ... I can't help that ... have a good one ... (BTW, did you know it's easier to buy a gun than to vote? Crazy world, isn't it?)
