[R.I.P.] One of the Greats has fallen

....from a Droid while out doing things...right now I'm waiting for my sgt to come pick up our team so we can move more trucks and construction equipment since Annual Training ends tomorrow. ...yeah I'm really in cave.

Is it o.k. to use abbreviations for profanity on this forum? Such as your use of stfu? Or how about if a profanity is used and it's not spelled correctly. The possibilities are unlimited?

Okay. I just think Gandolfini is a talented enough actor that he should make it through a RIP thread without criticism of his abilities. Maybe that's just me.

Yeah, it's probably just you. The point is, it's trying to portray him as something great and some of us want to know if he was anymore than an actor who appealed to kids with delusions of grandeur over being a gangster. Americans ya know! And the fallen bit! Didn't that used to get saved for the twoops?

You seem to have anger issues over this. I don't get it, but being butt hurt over an actor you don't personally watch being called "great" is a little over the top.

I'm working on my anger issues. It's been a long time since I've had to use my knife and they may let me out soon. But they told me that I'm not allowed to go around any actors and not to touch any knives. I think I can be good.

That's....good.

I never did watch him in the gangster
sitcoms but I have to wonder what made this one 'great'? Was he anything more than a guy who could look tough and appealed to little boys pretending that they were mobsters? A move star?

Enlighten us on the 'great' part. A Mozart? A Beethoven? A dead US president likeness in some way? And the 'fallen' bit? Something more than just dead like ordinary people are prone to get from overeating that causes obesity?

The Sopranos ? A " Sit Com " ?

Are you wrong about EVERYTHING ?

Maybe, but comedy is in the eye of the beholder. But I didn't watch it and I could be mistaking it for sitcom while it's real life true drama from the Island of Sicily or something?

Have some more ice cream fenton. It always works for young people when they are mourning their "fallen" superheroes.
Batman, RIP. Superman RIP. Ronnie Raygun RIP!
More ice cream, sob

There are 3 standards depending on where you're postong:

In The Basement, cuss and swear your heart out.

In the reguler forum, abreviations are ok, but changing the spelling of a word is not. Changing the spelling is considerrd an attempt to bypass the word sensor, thus an attempt to bypass the rules, and can result in moderator action.

In The Loft, you are required to be as civil as humanly possible at all times. I don't know if my sig would be acceptable in The Loft, but seeing as how I never post in The Loft there's no conflict.

You're not missing much.

All mafia shows and movies is completely interchangeable.

The only work anyone really knows him for is exactly the same as every other mafia boss that you've seen in movies.

Not quite. Gandolfini portrayed a Mafia boss that was quite different than all the others portrayed. He did a great job.

Agreed. He was the first (that I'm aware of) to take the mob portrayal away from the overly classified depiction of the Godfather. He made mobsters out to be believable, regular people (insofar as they can be termed "regular").

Watch The Godfather and then watch Goodfellas back-to-back. You will see the ignorance of your comment.

How? He played a man who ruled his family with an iron fist, yet they got away with murder behind his back.
And he ruled the "family" with an iron fist and killed those who got in his way or were looking like a liabilty.
Being of Italian decent, I found his character to be disgusting.

I think both of those movies glorified the mafia, more or less. What set The Sopranos apart is they successfully depicted the class structure of the mafia in real detail while also showing them to be, in their own way, true working class schlubs.

I didn't say he portrayed a moral character.

Easy to do over what 5 TV seasons vs a 3 hour movie.

There is no mafia. ;)

Actually his character was very vulnerable and suffered from depression hence his complicated relationship with his shrink. He killed people but was often haunted byhis past.

More like all the stress on his body from being fat. If anyone can take anything from this it's that fat people just don't live very long.

It's sad. He was an incredibly talented actor with amazing stage presence.

Depends on a variety of things. Proportionally, my grandmother was about as fat as Gandolfini. She lived to be 90.

Of course, she didn't smoke or drink and ate lots of vegetables, too.

Generally speaking, if one is fat, one assumes that other elements of one's lifestyle is equally unhealthy.

Generally speaking.

I never saw an episode of The Sopranos. Heard a lot about it but when I would see Gandolphini I would immediately think of his mafia character in True Romance... especially when he confronted Brad Pitt's stoned character.

On a side note... Brad Pitt's portrayal of a stoner in this movie, IMO, is second only to Sean Penn's Spiccoli character in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

When I first heard of The Sopranos, I thought "meh- doesn't sound like much of a story". Man, was I surprised when I started watching it. What made it so appealing to me, and I suspect to many others, was the way they took a bad guy personna, showed the human side of him, and made you feel empathetic with the man, regardless of his lifestyle. THe character development was excellent.

we throw the word "great" around too much ... I agree, and in the end, your sympathies have to be for the ones who loved him and he loved ... just as it should be with anyone who passes ... this fascination with actors, sports stars, etc. is not healthy ... I have much more admiration for teachers, doctors, garbage collectors, mechanics, etc. who go to work everyday and do their jobs well for people like us ...

Be they not an English Free Mason, love who you want friend, love who you want :peace

Everyone is great for at least a week after they die. is part of the process. I never saw Sopranos or True Romance, I have heard of him and saw the 'news' shows talking up and then the disappointment of the final episode.

Past that I don't know if he will be one of the greats a year from now. Time will tell.

My condolences to his family.

I watched the Sopranos religiously, and loved watching James Gandolphini
and the rest of the actors do a pretty convincing portrayal of a NJ Mob family.

That said I don't chalk up his acting with that of say Joe Pesci. In Casino and Goodfella's he was so convincingly evil for a moment you thought you were sure to be the next poor schlub on his hit list.

Robert Deniro and Al Sorvino in Goodfellas and of course Marlon Brando in the Godfather, great actors.

What drew me away from Sopranos was a far better show, Breaking Bad.
