Mexican-American boy's national anthem sparks racist comments

It has nothing to do with someone not liking your opinions. THAT is to be expected.

Apparently, there are quite a number of people on DP who haven't gotten that memo.

I made a truthful statement. Someone claimed that you can state your opinions here in peace, and that is just not the case.

I agree,you did make a truthful statement.

I'm not directing this at you,ChrisL,but there is an old saying in the restaurant business.
"If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen".

The kid is a citizen and so are his parents (his father served honorably in the US Navy). The kid celebrates their hispanic heritage and his American identity. Personally I'm no fan of the hispanic equivilent of disco that is mariachi, but the kid likes it and does it very well. He sang the anthem with sincerity (and beautifully) which is more than I can say for a lot of the anthem singers I've heard over the course of my lifetime.

Remember Roseanne Barr's rendition? :lamo I still like her though. She's really funny IMO.

I guess that's what you get when you ask comediennes to sing the National Anthem.

Wow, that was precidely what was in my mind when I wrote that.

No one's trying to stop him from singing in peace. People are just naturally going to question whether or not he's another illegal immigrant like the ones being paraded around in Congress to testify with immunity. Total insanity.

No. You're wrong.

Racist people will naturally question it. Only racist people.

Not all people. Not people.

I kinda like the saying "Too many cooks spoil the broth--so throw the asshats out of the kitchen."

Actually, I just made that up.

I believe that Hispanics constitute around 15 to 20 percent of the overall population in the US, so I don't think someone appearing as Hispanic is a rational reason to assume he or she is an illegal immigrant.

I don't assume every Hispanic is an illegal immigrant. But probably tells me that most illegal immigrants are Hispanic.

Thing about racists is they don't think of themselves as racists.

There's actually some pretty intense racism in this thread, but to them, their racist comments are seen as legitimate in their own universe.

Actually you'd might be surprised how many times chefs like myself have uttered the same sentiment,if not those exact same words. There has been a few times when I had to tell my own wife "honey,I love you,but I don't tell you what to do when you are in the operating room performing surgery,so don't tell me how to cook in my own kitchen". My wife is Cajun and doesn't seem to understand that not everything goes good with "Slap Yo' Mamma" hot sauce.

Yes, but people shouldn't just go around making false accusations. Illegal immigration is a serious crime (or SHOULD be). I totally understand the concern about illegal immigration, but still to think that any Hispanic is a possible illegal immigrant without ever even speaking to that person is kind of jumping to conclusions.

Yeah, but we're overthinking this situation. Anyone with half a brain and any access to the internet could find out within seconds that this kid is in fact a US citizen as are his parents. There will always been a few folks chiming in with stupid comments that bear little relation to reality for just about anything - welcome to the human race.

Just by laws of probability a vast majority of those suspected of being illegal immigrants will be Latinos. We shouldn't have to change our laws because only one demographic is breaking them.

What does that have to do with people assuming that the little boy or other Hispanic people are in the country illegally? Especially when you know absolutely nothing about that person.

For the record, I have always been for checking on the immigration status of criminals or people who come into contact with the police, but now that I've witnessed some of the things that people have said about this boy simply because of his darker colored skin, I can understand how others would be concerned about the harassment of innocent people.

I was always thinking that people (and especially hopefully the police) would exercise a little bit of common sense and NOT harass innocent people without probable cause.

And yes, this little boy should be receiving praise (like all children when they do something positive) and not having to be the brunt of other people's ignorance. I actually feel sorry for him. This must just suck all the pride and good feelings out of him.

I just ignore people who are complaining about that. I just assume either they were making a joke, or they are ignorant idiots. What I'm talking about, is the bigger issue about immigration, intentional obstructionism about solving the issue of immigration for political reasons. I'm not saying their statements are okay, but I'm positive there would be a lot less hostility to Latinos in general if illegal immigration weren't such a huge problem in our country.

I agree with most of what you say here but can easily understand the folks who speak before they check on this one (not agree with, just understand). The kid walks like a duck and quacks like a duck in all his performances, even though he's not a duck. If you had seen the kid introduced on America's Got Talent, and viewed all his performances, he has an overriding Mexican theme about him. The music, the dress and even the language he performs in.

However, as I stated, though I can understand how some might get the first impression he is not a citizen, or that his family aren't - it's an impression that can be easily check in a matter of seconds. The check reveals first impressions to be wrong in this case. Those who vented their first impressions on this one have egg all over their faces right now, rightfully so.

That might be true for a lot of people. Can't say for sure though.

We should never militantly obsess over race to such a level of absolute hysteria that any and every issue can be race-baited into a controversy, which is what is happening here. Americans are right to wonder if this is another attempt to shove Mexico down our throats. It happens non-stop.

OMG, NOOO. :lamo

I'm not. I didn't post this article. I just read everyone acting all aghast that a handful of blacks (i.e., Democrat voters) jumped to a conclusion. I'm just explaining that these guys aren't the freaking anti-Christ. We're under attack. People are going to be a little sensitive and over-react. And again, I'm not actually sure that he is an American citizen, at least according to the author of the 14th Amendment.

Oh the irony......now you are blaming it on blacks. What is it about the color of people's skin that affects you so negatively?

It just means you're a RINO. Newsflash: Only leftists play the race card incessantly an think they have "debated."

LOL....you are the one playing the race card more than anyone on this thread.

Nothing racist about wondering if a Mexican-looking kid was chosen to sing our national anthem while millions of illegal immigrants are in the process of being rewarded for breaking into our country, marching down our streets with their flags, demanding that we speak their language, educate their children and cut them welfare checks...all while smearing anyone who objects as a bigot.

Seriously, lay down this mindless, hysterical race-card. You have UTTERLY overplayed and discredited it at this point and it carries ZERO weight.

Speaking of overplayed and discredited....

First, let me say that the kids rendering of the national anthem was simply stunning... If I were to score it like an Olympic event, I'd give it a 9.95. That is one talented kid with a bright future in the music business.

As for this story... In short, this was an ideologically motivated "nothing" story that's only accomplishment was to unnecessarily and needlessly stoke racial tensions. Put in other terms, this story was a textbook example of how liberal bias in the main stream media directly effects the stories the public is presented.

Just break it down... We're talking about a dozen people in a nation of over 300 million that called the kid a Mexican and/or illegal alien on the internet and this is considered newsworthy to CNN? None of the comments called him a "wet back", "beaner" or some other type of nasty racial epithet, just an illegal alien or Mexican... Hell, even the kid was smart enough to know this was about him wearing a traditional Mexican mariachi outfit while singing the national anthem that sparked the comments. Now don't get me wrong, I do think the comments were uncalled for and a little mean, but that's only because it was a little kid they were talking about... CNN labeling those comments as "racist" is a stretch at best, at worse, totally bogus.

In reality, which I think is the case here, this is nothing more than the political correctness agenda and all the nasty double standards that go along with it rearing it's ugly head, rather than racism or intolerance. It's no secret that there are many hard line traditionalists in the US who find it very offensive that our national anthem was being sung by someone in an outfit that symbolizes Mexico, and based on those comments printed in the CNN story and the absence of racial epithets within them, it would appear that is likely the case here, rather than racism.

Could some of those people actually be racists?. Sure they could, but their comments didn't reflect that. Their words seemed to me to reflect the feelings of a few American's who took offense by how our national anthem was presented, which of course is an angle that we all know would never be explored by CNN or any other main stream news network, no matter how many people felt that way. This begs the question, do those people not deserve the tolerance and understanding that political correctness is supposed to foster, or is it truly a one way street littered with double standards and ideological beliefs?

Conclusion: This is not a story, but rather a pathetic attempt to push the PC agenda and prop up their political and ideological beliefs, that instead of exposing the evils of hatred and racial intolerance, has only served to promote and foster more of it. Good job CNN.

Could somebody PLEASE answer this?

How does a handful of idiots commenting about a Hispanic kid on twitter become BREAKING -MAINSTREAM NEWS-??

It's been the latest fad. Since the mainstream media began to care about blogging and the promotion of twitter, they thought it noteworthy what people were doing on those services. The anonymous online commentator or not-so-anonymous commentator on Facebook became the new phone caller and letter to the editor.

So treating people with respect and kindness is a "pc agenda"? That's just fabulous.
Behaving in a mature and educated fashion is a "pc agenda"? Wonderful.

I also wonder why you ONLY mention CNN? Fox affiliates are reporting on this too.

If you don't think this is about racism you are obviously fooling yourself.

This isn't some "agenda" manufactured out of thin air to promote a political platform.

This is about some seriously ignorant Americans making pathetically stupid comments about a young American boy who was singing the National Anthem at an NBA playoff game.

Hopefully it'll educate the dull and dimwitted morons who think that all non-white people must be lazy "criminals" who are "invading our country".

Maybe now that some FACTS are printed about this fine young man and his family the jack-off racists will think before they type?

Maybe some people have now learned that a "brown kid" can be just as American as a non-brown kid?

Sometimes it takes a lot to educate the ignorant.

Maybe some news stories about it can help?
Certainly the backlash regarding those moronic responses has been quite strong and supportive of the kid.

And I love that the Spurs brought him back for another performance.

How does a handful of idiots commenting about a Hispanic kid on twitter become BREAKING -MAINSTREAM NEWS-??

It's quite simple really.

The person attacked was a child. An American child.

So that makes it a news story.

It exposes the underlying racist hatred that's still very prevalent in our society in a way that some people view as quite shocking.

The kid didn't commit a crime. He wasn't spoofing the anthem. He didn't screw it up. He wasn't making fun of it.
He wasn't disrespecting the country or the anthem.

He sang it wonderfully and respectfully and there were still people who reacted with blatant hatred and ignorance towards him.

And as long as people just let stuff like that go, without calling attention to it, can you really expect things to get better?

Or maybe, just maybe, the backlash regarding this will force some people to shut the F up and not be so openly stupid.
