FEMA denies funds to West, TX, following plant explosion

FEMA denies funds to West, TX, following plant explosion | abc13.com

Obama told the people of West that they would not be forgotten by the government during this time of need. What a liar!

Re: FEMA denies funds to West, TX, following plant explosion

Article title is a bit misleading. Millions have already been given to West. What FEMA said is that no more additional funds will be given.

Re: FEMA denies funds to West, TX, following plant explosion

    From the OP's Link:

As of Wednesday, FEMA said the agency and the U.S. Small Business Administration had approved more than $7 million in aid and low-interest loans to West residents impacted by the blast. FEMA also is paying 75 percent of the costs of debris removal and will reimburse the state and the municipality for the initial emergency response.
Not exactly the same as "denies funds", now is it?

To further a point, from the article:

It's not unusual for FEMA to turn down that level of assistance for emergencies not stemming from natural disasters. In 2010, for example, officials denied a request for millions in aid after a gas pipeline explosion that consumed a Northern California neighborhood.
So I guess this isn't anything out of the norm either.

The government doesn't exist to bail out everyone from every disaster...

True, but what is worse is that, after Hurricane Sandy, Rick Perry himself said that FEMA should not have given those victims relief. What a hypocrite!!

However, I think FEMA should have helped to rebuild the school, and is being a bit stingy, despite having already given aid. And, although I can't prove it, I believe that it's payback for Perry's statements about Sandy's victims not deserving Federal aid. If this is true, then FEMA has acted immorally, IMHO. Politics should never play into a situation. If disaster strikes anywhere in America, then it has struck America, and we should all act like Americans, and give.

I don't disagree, but I'm not familiar with all FEMA rules. It's logical, however, that a localized non-natural disaster affecting a single town would not be at the top of the list, as would a natural disaster covering wide swaths of the population.

A couple of years ago in California, a PG&E gas line exploded nearly 3 dozen homes destroyed, many deaths. It destroyed the town. Although IIRC FEMA gave some limited aid to those who'd lost homes, allowing them temporarily housing in motels, etc., it certainly did not repair the homes/schools destroyed. It assisted on a limited basis... and it was a lot less than $7 million bucks and footing 75% of the clean-up costs!

I doubt Rick Perry's hypocrisy had anything to do with it. Probably just FEMA policy.

Funds from FEMA helped rebuild the Boardwalk after Hurricane Sandy. If FEMA can fund entertainment, then it can certainly fund a school.

Where's the fertilizer plant's insurance company?
