Re: A victory for the morning-after pill
I agree, I think this is one of the medications in the best interest of public health that should not be completely OTC. Part of keeping medications prescription only is ensuring that their access and use is limited and followed properly. As an OTC product there is nothing stopping anyone from using it every day or from young kids using it. I've had several patients ask very disturbing questions regarding it (like thinking it can properly regulate their period, reduce bleeding, enhances breasts, etc.) and I've even heard of a case where a woman asked if she could get it and take it prior to willingly engaging in unprotected sex on a weekend orgy event... This isn't something that should be on the shelf with the Tylenol and aspirin. As far as public health goes this is a mistake.
Exactly. People are acting as if this is some harmless little aspirin. Sex hormones (just as with other hormones) are not something that should be taken without serious consideration. I sure as hell wouldn't want to go grab a Levothyroxin off the shelf, if I thought my thyroid was underactive.
