Turkey is a modern nation with sort of a democratic system. They'll sort it out.

Violence all day and all night as Istanbul seeks to put an end to demonstrations. Water cannons, riot police. Like others, I hope Medusa is far away from the disturbances.

Doubt it... the Prime Minster and his henchmen are religious zealots who have tried to turn Turkey into another Islamic fascist state. At first the army and the constitutional court stopped them, but now the army generals are all on trial for treason and the court has been stacked with loyalists. Democracy is dead in Turkey and the reaction you are seeing on TV is the typical reaction of a right wing government ... it is classic and has been seen over the last 100+ years all over the world. Hitting down on the opposition threatening their power. I would not be surprised that the next election will be cancelled or mired in vote rigging.

The government has slowly but surely turning the country into their ideal place to live... no booze, women with no rights and so on. Hopefully the army has not been infected and handicapped too much and that they will eventually react and defend the principles of Ataturk and kick the sitting government out of power. There is no doubt that this is a massive power grab by radical Islamist with links to the worst of the worst in the Islamic world.

Have you noticed the words and actions that the Prime Minister has used? They are almost exactly the same as every other dictator in the region... from Libya to Turkey to Syria to Egypt to Iran. The protesters are "radicals, terrorist sympathizers and criminals" according to the Prime Minister...

She hasn't been seen on DP since June 8. I hope she is okay.

Huh? She's reporting live - she's been taking part in some of the protests, apparently.

WTF is going on over there?

Erdogan took the state in a decidedly Islamist direction, and produced a backlash.... but not one strong enough to translate (yet) into solid electoral opposition. He took out the military leadership a while back (whether or not they were actually thinking about overthrowing him is anyones' guess), so the main venue in Turkish Politics for a counter-Islamist move has been checked, and the populace themselves seem less up to that particular task than elements of them are up to setting cars on fire and getting tear-gassed.

Keep up the fight for liberty.

Something that needs to happen in this country soon as well.
