Boundless Informant: the NSA's secret tool to track global surveillance data | World news | guardian.co.uk

On Friday, in his first public response to the Guardian's disclosures this week on NSA surveillance, Barack Obama said that that congressional oversight was the American peoples' best guarantee that they were not being spied on.

"These are the folks you all vote for as your representatives in Congress and they are being fully briefed on these programs," he said. Obama also insisted that any surveillance was "very narrowly circumscribed".

Senators have expressed their frustration at the NSA's refusal to supply statistics. In a letter to NSA director General Keith Alexander in October last year, senator Wyden and his Democratic colleague on the Senate intelligence committee, Mark Udall, noted that "the intelligence community has stated repeatedly that it is not possible to provide even a rough estimate of how many American communications have been collected under the Fisa Amendments Act, and has even declined to estimate the scale of this collection."

Many representatives have complained that they were not informed of this surveillance program.

"Boundless Informant" is a great name for a program that's supposed to be "very narrowly circumscribed."

In my opinion this is very frightening because of the way in which the President has already abused his power. I know that this intelligence gathering isn't supposed to be used against ordinary Americans, but the IRS wasn't supposed to target the President's political opponents, wasn't supposed to leak their confidential information, the DoJ wasn't supposed to bug and target reporters or accuse them of crimes for doing their jobs. But it has all happened. What is there to keep the Administration from corrupting the NSA's activities as well?

How do we know Obama didn't already use the information gathered by the NSA.
People need to realize the vast majority of career civil servants are democrats. they all belong to unions and they advocate the democrat agenda of big government

The only conservatives you will find in D.C. are elected to be there

Be frightened... Be VERY frightened!!!!

Be frightened... Be VERY frightened!!!!

There is enough proof to be concerned, that the least of us have determined our future, as you ignore the blatant hypocrisy of your CORRUPT messiah.

This Administration is a complete disgrace.

To think I served in Iraq to protect our nation from foreign enemies when it was our own government that we needed to be protected from.

what on the campaign trail in 08 was a "violation of the basic civil liberties of the american people" and an "abuse of power" is last friday in sunny san jose a "modest encroachment on privacy"

are you gonna argue with the gray lady?

I don't know where to begin

how bout here:

“I can assure you the phone number tracking of non-criminal, non-terrorist suspects was not discussed [at the administration's classified briefings],” said [Congressman Aaron] Schock. “Most members have stopped going to their classified briefings because they rarely tell us anything we don’t already know in the news. It really has become a charade.”

“By the way,” [Senator Jeff] Merkley continued. “When I sought information [on the phone surveillance program], the only information I got was that, yes there is a program sweeping up broad amounts of data through the records act. This second thing, which we just learned about, called PRISM, I had no idea about.”

Dem. Senator disputes Obama's claims that Congress was briefed

The only lawmakers who knew about PRISM were bound by oaths of office to hold their tongues.

oregon senator ron wyden forced odni to release a statement that revealed that the fisa court in an 86 page report found that the nsa's data collection was unreasonable under the 4th amendment

the electronic frontier foundation sought thru foia to make public the report, the doj friday filed a motion to keep secret the ruling which found the nsa in violation of the constitution

What can you say ?

Liberals wont admit they mindlessly elected a media creation only to find out he was Bush on steroids when it came to snooping.

But Liberals struggle with a level of naivete and ideology that is usually only seen in children.

And like children they have a real hard time admiting fault, and embracing humility.

We keep arguing with you guys like we're trying to win something when in actuallity we've already won. Personally I like to think we're just twisting the knife so to speak.

Saddam Hussein was a foreign enemy...What's the irony?

If anything was a big cluster**** scandal in the last 15 years, it is Iraq. I don't want to derail this thread, so suffice to say that after 4 billion spent on a dictator who--at the time--was more interested in writing romance novels than sending people through a woodchipper, absolutely nothing is better because of it. To me, that is, as plain as day, a true scandal.

Speaking of children, I can't help but think -- after reading your post -- that I am in a school yard being lectured by the bully. :doh
