Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

The National Security Agency is currently collecting the telephone records of millions of US customers of Verizon, one of America's largest telecoms providers, under a top secret court order issued in April.

The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an "ongoing, daily basis" to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries.

The document shows for the first time that under the Obama administration the communication records of millions of US citizens are being collected indiscriminately and in bulk – regardless of whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing.

Seriously, spin that, Obama fans.

The Patriot Act (I'm assuming that this is covered by the Patriot Act) gets better and better all the time.

The article states that the Patriot Act is the fig leaf used for the over reach. But nobody but the President (read: no SANE person) interprets the provisions that broadly.

... So Obama railing against the Patriot Act was really just a way of saying "You REALLY don't want to trust ME with that..."

And the Bill of Rights gets pushed a little further into the shredder...

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

So one wonders what they do with that information? Flag customers who make call to certain countries? It has to be something like that. ??

Figure out who to audit next?

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

Seriously? This is old ****ing news. Where was your outrage during the Bush years?

Since the court order was just issued in April, I don't see how this can be considered old news. Not surprised Bush would be blamed though. :rofl

This from the same government you trust to maintain permanent records of our dna, even if never charged with a crime.

String Bean!! Quite the memory you have there. ;)

You didn't read anything in my response that indicated I had a problem with them collecting phone numbers though, did you?

I'm talking specifically about general warrantless wiretapping. That can of worms was opened during the Bush era... in the name of protecting against terrorists.

Well I don't know how far it goes back, but it looks like its been going on longer than that, possibly since 2006.

An expert in this aspect of the law said Wednesday night that the order appears to be a routine renewal of a similar order first issued by the same court in 2006. The expert, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive issues, said that the order is reissued routinely every 90 days and that it is not related to any particular investigation by the FBI or any other agency.

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

FYI

The NSA warrantless surveillance controversy (AKA "Warrantless Wiretapping") concerns surveillance of persons within the United States during the collection of foreign intelligence by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) as part of the war on terror. Under this program, referred to by the Bush administration as the "terrorist surveillance program",[1] part of the broader President's Surveillance Program, the NSA was authorized by executive order to monitor, without search warrants, the phone calls, Internet activity (Web, e-mail, etc.), text messaging, and other communication involving any party believed by the NSA to be outside the U.S., even if the other end of the communication lies within the U.S. Critics, however, claimed that it was in an effort to attempt to silence critics of the Bush Administration and their handling of several hot button issues during its tenure. Under public pressure, the Bush administration ceased the warrantless wiretapping program in January 2007 and returned review of surveillance to the FISA court.[2] Subsequently, in 2008 Congress passed the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, which relaxed some of the original FISA court requirements.
During the Obama Administration, the NSA has officially continued operating under the new FISA guidelines.[3] However, in April 2009 officials at the United States Department of Justice acknowledged that the NSA had engaged in "overcollection" of domestic communications in excess of the FISA court's authority, but claimed that the acts were unintentional and had since been rectified.[4]

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

I recall reading somewhere that during Bush years AT&T just gave them access to a major component to their system on the west coast which would have allowed them to eavesdrop on most calls in the US on their service without a warrant and regardless of whether both parties were domestic or if one was overseas. To be honest, I suspect this is a little like China's major data harvests in the US---they get everything they can get but have no idea what to do with most of it as of yet.

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

What did Romney say that shows he was against this?

Oh *shew* That makes it all better.

I've been a member of this site with 4 months, so what the f**k do you know?

Re: Revealed: NSA collecting phone records of millions of Americans daily

I'm laughing so hard right now. Your default answer to everything negative, "Obama done did it".

Obama burnt my toast, Obama clogged my toilet, Obama is everywhere at all times, manipulating all things and watching our every move....

Wait I think I figured it out...

OBAMA IS JESUS

So that is yet another cabinet level office that you claim Obama had no control over? What departments are left that Obama hasn't claimed to be completely ignorant of?

You think Obama is going to come in and tell the NSA, CIA, FBI to stop their clandestine operations? Sounds like a good way to get shot in the head.
