Roy Hibbert Uses Gay Slur in Post Game Press Conference

That's so gay.

Seriously...that makes it 'better'? And just out of curiosity when a black person is acting like a scumbag do you call them a nigger figuring that will insult them?

If I did, at least I know some people here who would have my back.

I don't call anyone "gay." However, when they spend sentence after sentence going on about butt sex, it seems to be on their mind an awful lot.

I think what it ended up was he was saying he needed to be there for his teammate "but not in a gay way."

Maybe we should all start bashing Seinfeld for his famous remarks then? So he was there for his teammates but not in a gay way.. LOL And this is insulting?

Tim-

It was the use of the word homo. That is considered to be offensive. Kind of like if he said "That's stupid, but not like a polack..."

I watched the clip and maybe it's just me but ebonics must be in play coz I didn't get the no homo comment where he used it? Can someone explain it to me?

Tim-

I think what it ended up was he was saying he needed to be there for his teammate "but not in a gay way."

You know the "That's what she said" line of joking? Where someone says something that, if you try to think of it in a sexual way, could be "humerously" transferred to a female saying it. Like someone coming inside out of a rainstorm going "I'm all wet" and someone replies "THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!".

This is a similar joke, and at times even interchangable. In Hibbards instance, he was suggesting he did a bad job of helping out his teammate because the other teams players "stretched him out" on defense. Taking the same general statement, and apply "That's what she said", and you'll likely understand the timing joke of it better.

Person 1: Man, those guys really stretched me out last night.
Person 2: That's what she said!

The differnece with the "no homo" line of joking is that instead of a second person responding to an individuals statement, it's the individual themselves making the comment.

Person 1: Man, those guys really stretched me out last night......no homo.

It's not saying he needed to be there for his teammates in a "gay way"...it was a joking statement suggesting that the MEN on the other team he was referencing didn't "Stretch him out" in a way one could be "stretched out" in a sexual manner, realizing that the phrasing he used could be jokingly twisted to such a meaning.

The other instance I've heard it used, and doesn't seem to be the case in this instance, is when someone says something that the person thinks sounds like something a gay person may say but clarifying that they're not meaning it in a sexual/amorous way. Something like "Dude, I couldn't stop looking at that picture of Santonio Holmes junk!....no homo". In a lot of ways, that usage is similar to the "...not that there's anything wrong with that". One of those uses where an individual realizes something they said could be taken in a certain way, and clarifying the intent of the message.

I'm just hitting 30, and it's not really too common in my immediete age group, but seems to be a phrasing that's popped up more frequently in the age group just back from mine.

As a private employer, the NBA has the right to set certain behavior standards for those that are employed by its franchises. If in my job, I called someone a derisive term, I'd likely be disciplined. As I should be.

If you don't like the NBA's regulation of player behavior, don't play pro basketball and don't purchase their product.

on what point are you having trouble grasping that no one was called a derisive term? "no homo" isn't used to insult a person, it's used to point out a term or phrase could have a double meaning

example: someone referring to their asshole boss on night shift "he was riding my back all night" "no homo"

I always love these "muzzle" threads. In order to not "muzzle" someone that uses a slur we should "muzzle" the people that disagree with his slur.

The NBA fined him because he represents their organization. Apparently your issue is with the NBA. Maybe people that like their sports mixed with slurs can start a petition to make the NBA allow more slurs to be used.

Ya'd think, right? Yet, even with a lot of liberal leaning folks here on this site the first chance they get to drop an insult or attack somone, it frequently involves an implication that the other party in question night themselves be of questionable gender confidence. Implying homosexuality is apparently a real insult. But...being gay is no big deal, right?

Oh yeah!! We can see on the Michelle Bachmann thread how they are insulting her husband because he might be Gay (I don't know or care), insulting her as a woman the way they never would with a leftist woman, and then treating Republican Blacks as 'Uncle Toms' or 'Aunt Thomasinas'.

But racism is the history of the Left and, of course, the Democrat Party. We can never expect much else from them.

Who did he offend?

The player in question isn't making a fuss about it and would be a wuss if he did. Just because he's Gay doesn't mean he'll break into tears when he hears these terms. He's more of an adult than the player who used the term or those who are doing all the complaining.

He said he didn't care if he got fined, so he should suck it up. The NBA has every right to enforce an anti-homophobe policy. Good for them.

I don't disagree if that's what they choose to do but I'm not sure what was anti-homophobic in what he said.

I could understand if he said he wasn't gay and hopes all gays die but all he said was he isn't gay.

That's not the same thing at all though.

Your example specifically implies Polish people are stupid.

He said nothing more than he wasn't gay.

True enough. Of course if I said something offensive to a customer, I'd get disciplined whether it's an insult or not.

Jason Collins isn't even involved in this at all.

If you used a term like that in front of customers, would you get in trouble at work? Even if it wasn't insulting them?

If you cannot understand what pejorative means, or how 'no homo' was used as such, then I dunno what to tell you.

The guy had a right to say what he said. Other people have a right, and were right, to criticize him. The NBA has a right to sanction their employees for on-duty behavior that harms their image. No issue here.

How does anything about Michele Bachmann even relate to racist? Am I sexist if I don't like her? Republican isn't a race.

Playing the race card from the right again?

Just try saying teabagger though, and watch them get offended....

That's about as big of a cop out as I've heard in a while.

What customers? Did Gay customers complain? Is you it deciding that 'homo' is a Gay slur? Perhaps one day 'homo' will be acceptable and 'Gay' will be offensive and outlawed. Would you be offended if someone called you a hetreo? Most Gays, I believe don't care. It's others who get their tail in a twist.

Stupidity cannot be controlled, otherwise Barrack Obama would not be President.

I explained it, in detail, earlier in this thread. Expecting others to repeat themselves, in ignorance and without having read the thread, is nonsense.

And you explained it well.

Time for some sensitivity training in the NBA. It's not okay.

Is it ok to say "hetero"?

This is just more political correctness run amuck.

And you explained it well.

Why, thank you. Nonetheless, it seems, for some, this will all remain a grand mystery, a "war on straights".

Are you still allowed to say "straight"? Wouldn't that offend crooked people? Or the un-straight?

True.

Al-Gayda has declared Jihad on Christmas, hetero sports pros and the American way. We all better watch our backs, if ya know what I mean.
