Homosexuality is still not viewed as okay by a lot of Americans and more so in the black community. Heck, you can hear Hibbert's teammate laugh when he says it. No matter the effort by a few, the many most likely will never believe being gay is okay.
What one says when at a press conference representing their team absolutely demands professionalism. He was fined $75,000. Hopefully, he won't do it again.

I will agree with you that it was unprofessional. The fine was entirely too steep though IMO. Many Americans would be happy to earn that in a year.

He said he didn't care if he got fined, so he should suck it up. The NBA has every right to enforce an anti-homophobe policy. Good for them.

It is a lot of money to a lot of people, but to them it's relatively little. This was all private contract as well. Do we go too far? Yeah, but there's no government reaction here so there's not much to do about it. The public persona of professional sports is absolutely in the interest of the sport. I think it is a lot of money, but also Hibbert knew the contract.
You know the time is right to take control, we gotta take offense against the status quo

"No Homo" can be viewed as insensitive to be sure, but it hardly qualifies as a slur. Referring to the press as "mother****ers" is also unprofessional and a comment that warrants a fine of its own.

$14.5 million a year. $75,000 is about 1/2 of 1% of his salary.

    To a guy making $75,000 a year? That's the equivalent of $1,125.

    Mind-boggling, isn't it?

I'd agree if anyone was saying that this kind of talk should be illegal. But in this case I think the NBA can and should encourage its members to act professional. Maybe the fine was too much, but if they believed that anything less wouldn't discourage that kind of thing, then I guess it was necessary.

It was at a press conference and said by a figure head of your team. Yeah you should apologize. Reaching out to Jason Collins was just good PR.

Because if I did I wouldn't get to be reminded of how easily the truth hurts the left when they are forced to confront it. Good to see that a preference for alliterated blather to avoid the subject of the OP streak continues.

This is an overreaction IMO. How is it okay for Jason Collins to proclaim his sexuality but not okay for Roy Hibbert to say what he said? The sexual preference of public figures is something that homosexuals use constantly to further their cause. When the other side says something, I don't believe it to be proper for the gay community and/or gay supporters to attempt to shame them or muzzle them. Simple as that.

Pacers center Roy Hibbert apologizes for gay slur, *reaches out to Jason Collins* - NY Daily News
Because insulting someone is not OK. For example - Do you think it's OK to say the n-word? Most people don't, and that's not even a liberal/conservative thing. Plus, he wasn't giving his opinion of Jason Collins as a person or as a ball player. He wasn't giving his opinion about homosexuality in general. He used the term "homo" as an insult toward LeBron James. Can you tell the difference?
