given the reaction here, it's not really surprising more people were not critical of Collins coming out. I mean, it's not like professional sports is known to be the most PC and enlightened crowd, so I doubt everyone was actually like "cool"
Guess it's a good thing he didn't describe his defense on James as niggardly or he would have had to not only apologize to everyone in the country but probably retire from the league!
There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences.

It'd be the same as the difference between you pointing out that you're from (e.g.) Alabama (I have no idea where you're actually from), and me calling you a redneck hick. Apples and oranges.
many years ago there was a short basketball player named Calvin Murphy. Norwalk CT-to Niagra to the NBA. he might have been the most coordinated man on earth-he used to do a half time show with twirling batons that was a thing of awe. He also was one of the baddest toughest guys in pro ball
Boston had a power forward named Sydney Wicks Wicks was 6-9 a foot taller then Murphy
in one game Murphy was going into score and wicks hammered him. Murphy made some comment that Wicks was a "fag" (there was a rumor in the league Wicks was gay). Wicks took a swing at Murphy who jumped up-grabbed Wicks' fro and proceeded to beat the living crap out of the foot taller guy
