N.J. Sen. Frank Lautenberg Dead at 89

GOP will get one more seat-at least for 1.5 years.

Actually there is a conundrum in New Jersey election law because there are two conflicting rules for appointing senators in the same bill.

The bill in question.

P.L. 2011, c.37 (S923 3R)

According to this statute the replacement would serve until the next general election.

New Jersey Statutes - Title 19 Elections - 19:3-26 Vacancies in United States senate; election to fill; temporary appointment by governor. - New Jersey Attorney Resources - New Jersey Laws

But according to this stattuate the replacement would aserve until the next primary.

New Jersey Statutes - Title 19 Elections - 19:27-6 Congressional vacancies. - New Jersey Attorney Resources - New Jersey Laws

Since you are a lawyer turtle, I presume you might find it interesting to read.

Looks like we are down to zero senators, Menendez doesn't count for much.

Wouldn't it blow your mind if he picked a democrat... :)

Actually, Christie is a man of principle and it wouldn't surprise me at all if he honored the voters of NJ and appointed a Democrat since that's who they voted for - it would also make Christie's reelection a shoe-in.

As governor perhaps, but he can kiss a presidential bid goodbye if he chose that route, IMO.

Maybe so, but I would hope that wouldn't stop him from doing what he feels is right - America could use a President who doesn't govern by polls or ideology.

At this point Christie would have to be caught tweaking on meth, with a cleaver in his hand, covered in blood, in a room full of dead 14-year-old Eastern European sex slaves to not get reelected.

Considering he's now raking in contributions from Dem donors, it's a given...

It wouldn't surprise me if Christie chose a Democrat. It's only a short term appointment, and it would help sustain the bipartisan popularity that already has him 30 points ahead. It would make it harder for him to ever become a national Republican candidate though, so I could see it going the other way as well.

In general I usually prefer governors to appoint candidates who are most similar to the senator the people voted in, so it wouldn't bother me much if he appointed a Democrat.

It'll be a Christie pick, which means they'll be an Obama buttlicker.

So, you mean, politically acceptable for New Jersey? They do it for Jersey, not for the rest of us.

He might as well, cause whoever he picks probably won't help the Republicans.

Yeah, he'll give Bam and handjob under the podium.

Perhaps he should have taken the advice last year not to seek the nomination for reelection. May he rest in peace and comfort and enjoy whatever afterlife he believed in.

I agree. I do note that his positions on gun rights were abhorent and his "Lautenberg Amendment" was a truly disgusting bit of retroactive idiocy

I agree - I didn't want to speak ill of the man in his death since in my view his faults were all political/policy in nature and not directly harmful to others.

See, that's the kind of petty, childish, partisan bullsh!t that is literally destroying this country.

Not only did NJ elect a Democrat for that seat/term but they've elected a Democrat for the Class 2 seat every election since 1979 (and a Democrat for the Class 1 seat every election since 1982).

I think the will of the people of NJ (aka: the people who are actually fvcking represented by that seat) is pretty darn clear.

How could anyone fault any governor, or hold it against him in any way, for respecting the will of the people of the state he governs when it comes to their representation in government?

I'll tell you how. You'd have to be a fvckwit. Simple as that. Would you fault Christie for appointing a Democrat to fill Lautenberg's seat? If yes, go look in the mirror. What you'll see is a fvckwit.

It pretty much totally undermines the bedrock principal of democracy/representative republicanisim.

Selfish, self-absorbed fvckwits such as these are what's destroying America. And we have them in both partys by the tens of millions.

And for the record, I didn't vote for Lautenberg, in fact I've voted against both Lautenberg and Menendez in every election either has ever stood for, in fact I've voted against Democrats for Congress in NJ every election since 1990.

But I respect the "idea" of whhat American is supposed to be more than I feel that I'm a special little flower who always deserves to get my own way by hook or by crook.
