Confidential report lists U.S. weapons system designs compromised by Chinese cyberspies - The Washington Post

Designs for many of the nation’s most sensitive advanced weapons systems have been compromised by Chinese hackers, according to a report prepared for the Pentagon and to officials from government and the defense industry.
Among more than two dozen major weapons systems whose designs were breached were programs critical to U.S. missile defenses and combat aircraft and ships, according to a previously undisclosed section of a confidential report prepared for Pentagon leaders by the Defense Science Board.

Experts warn that the electronic intrusions gave China access to advanced technology that could accelerate the development of its weapons systems and weaken the U.S. military advantage in a future conflict.

Although the consequences of our leading military systems being compromised are extraordinary, as someone less privy to the inside workings of the military than your average Tom Clancy reader I can't help but wonder why specific designs are still found online. It's been no secret that the Chinese have been successfully hacking us for some time now (as the article states the Joint Strike Fighter hack happened back in 2007), so why are sensitive secrets critical to our national defense and offense put in a place that you know have to be successfully hacked given enough time and effort?

Another paragraph near the end of the article echoed another question I had:

Winslow T. Wheeler, director of the Straus Military Reform Project at the Project on Government Oversight, made a similar point. “If they got into the combat systems, it enables them to understand it to be able to jam it or otherwise disable it,” he said. “If they’ve got into the basic algorithms for the missile and how they behave, somebody better get out a clean piece of paper and start to design all over again.”

So it that it? Is our entire military with regards to sufficiently advanced enemies officially obsolete now? Did these hacks just cost us trillions of dollars for the very necessary research and construction of a whole new military?

The world's digital now, and we're losing. We need to recruit our own super hackers. Instead we've decided to hunt them down for copyright violations.

I'd rather have wars be fought online.

Why can't we keep secrets like these offline?

If we had done the Manhatten Project like we do things today,we'd be speaking Japanese!!

Well, a little late for that consideration. According to the article the hacks allowed the Chinese to catch up 25 mother****ing years.
