Boy Scouts vote to welcome gay members

No, I was born and raised in Antarctica. I hunted seals and lived with the Penguins. Why do you ask?

You suggested that official policy change would impact how kids perceive homosexuals and teasing.

Such is rather naive

Remember how people used to make fun of celebrities that came out as gay? Why did that stop? Why did people stop making fun of Ellen, and Seacrest?

Yeah, stereotypes just don't form out of the ether.

They usually form because certain individuals within groups can be obvious, and when those individuals share some common traits, then those traits are associated as being part of the group, in large numbers, when, although they may be more common in certain groups of people, that doesn't necessarily make them traits that a majority of the group holds.

While not scientifically proven, the widely accepted conventional wisdom is that the increasing acceptance of homosexuals has been heavily influenced by greater exposure to homosexuals.

I do not see how this is a positive. Sexuality discussions should have no place with kids like this. Especially at what can be a very confusing time of life.

Because those people focused on earning respect based on their work and left the "love me, I'm gay" groupies to do their own thing.

I don't think so, provided the Scout Masters nip it instantly in the bud and verbally slap kids that think such teasing is cute. If it even happens at all.

To those who say "They didn't go far enough," be aware that this is a definite step in the exact right direction. And they didn't have to do change their policy at all.

Yeah they probably want to join the boy scouts for the same reasons I would of liked to join the girl scouts. LMAO

I highly doubt you would legitimately want to join the girl scouts for the same reason that homosexual boys want to join the boy scouts. As a girl scout, when we went "camping", we slept in a building, on mattresses, made ribbon dancers for a project and learned a routine with it, and we went camping once, at Camp Golden Valley. Our meetings were held in a room where the scout leader normally taught preschoolers. We learned about the "brownies" who were really the children who cleaned for their parents. I would have much rather learned what the boys learned in boy scouts, how to actually do outdoor things, go camping, being rugged. And there are plenty of gay boys who want to learn those things.

I don't understand why you think just because you can't/couldn't control your urges, you believe no one else can either.

Nobody's having "sexuality discussions" in the Boy Scouts. They are simply accepting kids no matter their sexuality. The gay witch hunts of the past were discussing sexuality.

If you expect a 13 year old boy not to hit on a 13 year old girl he spends the night with in a pup tent you must be gay.

There was a 15 year old boy who took me on a date who didn't know how to hit on a girl, so I don't know why you believe most 13 year old boys wouldn't be scared of making such moves.

I think I understand lifting the ban on gay scouts but not on gay scout leaders.

For gay scouts, it is so now accepted not to discriminate against gays - and many schools now even require students attend gay sensitivity training for which then students are tested on gay acceptance, increasing numbers of parents and kids wouldn't participate even if not gay themselves in if there is discrimination against gay boys.

But I also understand why not to allow gay scout leaders. The Scouts are between a rock and a hard place due to how legalistic American society is. IF they go thru intense interrogations of gay applicants, they will be accused of discrimination. If they don't, and there is proof of sex with the boys, the Scouts are in Catholic-Church style lawsuits that could cost financially destroy the Scouts economically.

IF the boy scouts do NOT allow opposite gender scout leaders, then the same rational justifies not allowing gay scout leaders for same sex scouts. For example, if the Scouts won't allow men to be Girl Scout leaders, it is then "fair" they do not allow gay men to be Boy Scout leaders for boys for the same sexual abuse potential issues - and same MASSIVE potential legal risks.

Sounds to me like gay boys would be more at home in the girl scouts. My would have liked to join the GS remark was obviously humor, get one. A sense of humor that is.

You continue to stereotype, badly. There is no reason to believe that most gay boys would be less like straight boys and more like girls. You are venting something here, with no reason.

And, no, you aren't funny. Trying to put everyone in a particular negative connotation just because they belong to a particular group shows that you hold some negative feelings toward that group. This is a debate, not your personal standup test platform.

Go to any school and see how well kids respond to an authority figure telling them not to tease a person

kids still make fun of these people. Just an FYI, kids can be real dicks

I agree, but I don't think Maggie was claiming all gay men are flamers, more that the gay flamer isn't exactly some type of myth.

two new changes following this announcement:

1. The boy scout's most prestigious award will no longer be "Eagle Scout". It will be replaced by the "Flamingo Scout"

2. The Webelos will be renamed the "Weblows"

;)

Boy Scouts' venue is not the classroom. Classrooms don't help boys turn into men; boy scouts does.

Yeah, but kids are still kids. You know, they are still assholes to each other, disregard authority when they can, etc

Many gays fit that "myth", but not all and those others can't be leaders no matter how manly they are. And some straight men (like the one I described earlier) fit the description of being overly feminine/not manly. If it were all about the appearance of being a positive or negative male role model, then you/she would have a point. But one of the main things that shows this isn't the real reason is the very fact that women (a good amount in fact) are scout leaders. They are not going to be "good male role models" when they aren't even men.

From their site:

Yes. Every leadership position is open to women. In fact, more than one-third of Scout volunteers are women.

But isn't this one of the reasons the BSA exists to begin with, to try to teach boys not to act like assholes to each other?

"Culture war"..................You're welcome........................

What? What about a "Culture war", how does that at all relate to my comment which you quoted? Not coherent in the slightest.
