California Faces a New Quandary, Too Much Money

After years of grueling battles over state budget deficits and spending cuts, California has a new challenge on its hands: too much money. An unexpected surplus is fueling an argument over how the state should respond to its turn of good fortune.

The amount is a matter of debate, but by any measure significant: between $1.2 billion, projected by Gov. Jerry Brown, and $4.4 billion, the estimate of the Legislature’s independent financial analyst. The surplus comes barely three years after the state was facing a deficit of close to $60 billion.

At first glance, the situation should be welcome news in a state overwhelmingly controlled by Democrats, who have spent much of their time slashing programs they support. After last November’s elections, the party has two-thirds majorities in the Assembly and the Senate, relegating Republicans almost completely to the sidelines.

Instead, the surplus has set off a debate about the durability of new revenues, and whether the money should be used to reverse some of the spending cuts or set aside to guard against the inevitable next economic downturn.

    Too much money?

The NY Times thinks California has too much money? The failed, rejected NY Times writes an article you salivate over, claiming California has too much money?

Do you understand how much money the state has confiscated from cities and counties? Do you understand how much liberals have raised taxes and fees?

Gold award for most insane post I've read about California.

Sorry, your one dimensional data is completely deprived of factual content that shows how desperate California's fiscal situation is.

Like I said we're not worried as I think we've been ranked the Top State to do bussiness consecutively for what ? 5 or 6 years running ?

    Your;e getting desperate.
LOL.....Texas is the state with the highest number of people working for minimum wage. Wow....that's not a #1 that I would be proud of Fenton. Of course businesses LOVE to do business in a state where they have workers willing to work for peanuts so that the corporate executives can be fat. I bet that makes you a real proud Texan!

You do understand what "lowest per capita" means don't you? Are you aware of the size of Texas' economy?

Apples and oranges, my brother owes more than me because of his mortgage, but he is far more able to cover it than I am so I shouldn't feel superior for being in less debt.

    California however, is screwed.

It's a failed newspaper because they print information you don't like to hear. You question my NY Times as a source when you linked to some obscure site I doubt anyone in hear has ever heard of?

California is running a surplus... just a year or two after Jerry Brown got in there. It's a fact whether you believe the NY Times or whether you choose to live in fairy fantasy land.

If you want to say he's taking credit for past policies that are just now taking effect... be my guest and prove it. I'm all ears. But if you are going to just sit back and play refuter-man and deny the facts that California is ****ting in tall cotton today compared to two years ago, you are just lying to yourself and you can ride that sinking bullship all the way down. I got the facts on my side and I linked to a credible source. Sorry if these things burst your ideological bubble and hurt your feelings.

There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide the world that cannot be achieved more rationally through entirely secular means.

Well we had allot of Californians to employ as they left your plague State in search for jobs.

    They're typically worth about 7.50 a hour.

Ah "surplus" with nearly 300 billion in unfunded liabillities.

Another word for the claim of a "projected surplus" from the mouth of a Lib politician is a "lie".

LOL....nice dodge. Sorry....but most people are fleeing to Texas to take a minimum wage job. Texas may be good for corporations but the workers pay for it. Living in Texas is like living in a third world country.

You know we don't mind you Cali residents coming to visit, just clean up your slug trail on the way out.

Calling Texas a third world country is real smart, since Californians are coming here to find work.

Whats that make that hell hole of a bankrupt State you live in ?
