    again...

You should get out more. Perhaps expand your horizons and such. The world you live in seems to be very shallow, supporting the stereotypes you'd like to see.

All this gym talk is fine but that kind of muscle can't compare to working man muscle which tend to be more like rope than balloons.

In what way does physical strength make you more self reliant? It has zero value with respect to almost everything that adults are required to do in the world. Now maybe if the US economy prized jar opening skills and the ability to take out garbage efficiently you might have a point.

Upper body strength is nearly useless for one's day-to-day life. How much time does a person spend lifting something heavy, even during leisurely pursuits?

This doesn't mean it's not relevant, but proper gym workouts are supposed to comprise strengthening the whole body using free weights, not just biceps/triceps and chest.

The dude in the gym trying to show off by just benching huge barbells while the rest of his body (below the chest) goes to waste is not a model of masculinity; he's just an idiot. So it's hardly surprising that the right wing would be associated with that.

    Seriously?
Damn. You just negated a big chunk of my life and a lot of others who live rural. You need to take out the word, 'world' and put in 'city'.

Obviously coming from someone who hasn't lifted in his life. Weight training is an investment in one's self. It takes planning ahead, dedication, discipline, as well as motivation. All of these qualities in fact, ARE associated with self-reliance. Its less about absolute strength, and more so about the commitment that achieving such strength requires. That can and does make one more self reliant.

Biceps are the only muscle group you should workout. I personally prefer using the curl rack

    LOL ! What ??!!

The guys at the Gym who waste hours curling used to ask me how I managed to get such large upper arms ?

Since they of-course never saw me with curling.

I explained that the TRICEP is 75% of the upper arm and to put away the curling bar IF they wanted results and go to the tricep extensions.
