I guess if others come forward to show evidence otherwise, I will happily retract that statement. I guess in hindsight it would have been more accurate to have stated it appears that it was not applied equally.

Honestly I think the Commissioner acted like a boob when he apologized. Did he bother to look into the number of applications the IRS faced from obvious rightwing groups versus progressive groups? Maybe he should have before he went public to see if in fact the IRS wasn't just doing its job.

Here's a concept: the IRS SHOULD vigorously investigate organizations that appear to be political front groups looking for tax breaks,

No argument at all with that statement. But the IRS needs to place policies in place that ensure that the process is not abused and open to bias.

You're preaching to the choir on that. I know the IRS up close due to my practice. They're usually professional (much better than state taxing authorities), but lack of systematic policies can lead to unpleasantries with overzealous auditors and revenue agents.

It's just not clear to me that the Cincinatti Office did anything wrong, and simply vigorously examined suspect applications.

And the appearance of bias is as bad as bias in a government agency, I'll grant you that. The IRS not only has to be fair, but it has to appear to be fair. That said, I find this thing trumped up a bit.

Its a good argument to get rid of the income tax system and replace it with a sales tax

Yeah because it's impossible to cheat on sale taxes.

    that's not the issue

The IRS gives the government way too much power that it was never intended to have

National sales tax rates can be raised without anyone realizing it. Sneak it into an unrelated bill on page 560.

A National Sales Tax has the same problem as European VAT. One of the benefits of a complex income tax code is that it's hard to pull sneak raises.

Furthermore, compliance for National Sales Tax is going to make the IRS into one of the largest government agencies out there. Mere compliance on sales tax will require millions of auditors. National Sales tax is all fine and dandy on paper, but it's a bloody frackin' nightmare in practicality if you're going to replace income taxes with it.

At a rate of 5%, non-compliance is low. At a rate of 17~26%, non-compliance is huge.

it also cuts down massively on the power of congress though

and raising the sales tax will piss every voter off

a bit more risky than just taking "the rich" more to buy the votes of the masses
