How official is the 1st Amendment?

They apologized for the appearance of any inappropriateness.
Apologies in Washington are dirt cheap and usually mean little to nothing other than a desire to placate their biggest detractors.
Giving a second or third look into the tax status of any organization that advocates a destruction of the government by starving it of revenues is absolutely appropriate and absolutely called for.

The TEA Party and it's supporters absolutely have the right to incriminate themselves. The first amendment guarantees that they can do that.
    They have.
When they say things like ; " the government should be starved" and "The government should made small enough to be drowned in a bathtub".
Sounds to me like tax dodging anarchists.

I thought we were talking about the Teabagger Party. If "not paying taxes" is a major component of their platform, then it should be easy for you to find proof of it.

    How did they incriminate themselves?

Calling for lower taxes and smaller government isn't a crime.

The IRS should never have apologized at all They should have doubled down assuring that if anyone calls for the "starving of the government" that they are guaranteed to be audited.
    That would make sense.

    That would make sense.
It would also guarantee that someone in the IRS would go to prison, too. Which would be a good thing.

I'm all about starving the government, until they learn how to better manage my money.

So would you feel better if we were taxed more? BTW: This whole WH BS, IRS, Benghazi and the AP deal gives new meaning to transparency. A bunch of 2 bit Chicago thugs running the show.

Calling for the end of the American government isn't a crime either but use your head ... If you were looking for tax dodgers and one group was calling for an end to taxes and the end of government and the other groups were not...who would you investigate?
It only makes sense that those groups are much more likely to be cheating and trying to hoodwink the IRS.
They have called attention to themselves with their wildly radical demands for the cutting of all taxes and the end of the US government.
