Ex-SC Gov. Sanford back in political office

As I stated many many many pages ago in this thread, the one that kept electing Marion Berry sure did.

What are you talking about? Marion Berry is a hero of the people.

what's funny is the ration of **** one gets for citing Bush and that was just 5 years ago. but dragging up Marion berry's political corpse from around 3 decades ago... now THAT's some pertinent stuff.

Then why'd you do it?

I didn't. I made the OP and about 7 different people dropped in and cited Marion Berry and as I said to Turtledude who was the first to make the comparison... I said I think that comparing Sanford to Berry an apt comparison.

I think most people cited him to show that voters often disregard character for more immediate concerns, and not as a means to justify his behavior

I will honsetly say that I think you did so to show that voters often disregard character. Most of the others seem quite happy that Sanford is in and if that's the case, then using Marion was simply justification.

For the record, the name is spelled "Barry."
Marion Barry broke the law; Mark Sanford did not.

You're wasting your time with the insults. Sanford's peccadillo was universal and apolitical.

No, no, they were exemplary of conservative hypocrisy. Do you want me to get his family value quotes and line them up like the chorus girls he courted? And I love his comments blaming liberals and Democrats for destroying marriage.

But conservatism is hypocritical at its core: that's why the tea party types reelected him -- he was a hypocrite who attacked others for what he personally engages is. That's the definiton of conservatism.

Meet the Hypocrites: Governor Mark Sanford

For the better part of the last thirty years the Republican Party has claimed the mantle of family values, as being a party morally superior to others.

And once again that image has taken a hit, as Governor Mark Sanford (R-SC) has followed the same path of Newt Gingrich, Bob Livingston, Rudy Giuliani, John Ensign, David Vitter, Larry Craig, Mark Foley and others by admitting to having an affair with a woman from Argentina. The State, South Carolina's most widely read newspaper, has uncovered a steamy e-mail exchange between the two, saying it will release the full exchange for tomorrow's print edition.

Sanford, who voted for the impeachment of President Clinton when he was a member of Congress, reacted angrily when confronted with the news that Speaker-designate Bob Livingston had cheated on his wife in 1998.

Indeed, then-Rep Mark Sanford was pretty clear about his views of President Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky and that of Mr. Livingston.

While serving as a U.S. congressman, Sanford was incredibly critical of his colleagues’ marital misdeeds, including the affairs of former congressman Bob Livingston and President Bill Clinton:
“The bottom line, though, is I am sure there will be a lot of legalistic explanations pointing out that the president lied under oath. His situation was not under oath. The bottom line, though, is he still lied. He lied under a different oath, and that is the oath to his wife. So it’s got to be taken very, very seriously.” [Sanford on Livingston, CNN, 12/18/98]

“We ought to ask questions…rather than circle the wagons for one of our tribe.” [Sanford on how the GOP reacts to affairs, New York Post, 12/20/98]

“I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign). I come from the business side. If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he’d be gone.” [Sanford on Clinton, The Post and Courier, 9/12/98]

“The issue of lying is probably the biggest harm, if you will, to the system of Democratic government, representatives government, because it undermines trust. And if you undermine trust in our system, you undermine everything.” [Sanford on Clinton, CNN, 2/16/99]

Perhaps my favorite quote by the hypocritical Governor Sanford, is one where he parrots the Republican party's family-values mantra, is this:

Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., said he would be "struggling" during Christmas over whether to support Livingston, even though the speaker-designate had not broken the law. "We as a party want to hold ourselves to high standards, period," Sanford said.

But if one is not conservative, and believes Sanford's views are generally sound, then one can support him without reference to family values or religion, etc. Beyond that, I'm not aware that he ever courted chorus girls and I invite you to support your claim. Finally, like most lefties, you miss the fundamental characteristic of the Tea Party: more than anything else it was libertarian in origin. Most Tea Party supporters I know care very little about family values issues.

Yes Sanford did. Unless of course you want to say that using taxpayer money for personal peccadilloes is just a-ok.

Ex-SC Gov. Sanford back in political office

Former Republican South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford revived a scandal-scarred political career by winning back his old congressional seat Tuesday in a district that hasn't elected a Democrat in three decades.

The comeback was complete when he defeated Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch, the sister of political satirist Stephen Colbert. With 87 percent of the precincts reporting, Sanford had 54 percent of the vote.

too ****in funny to see this level of partisan blindness.

Especially since democrats turned gerrymandering into an art...

You should see my new district lines (Illinois) 80% ghetto (democrat) yeah give me that free Obama phone....

Horrible...........

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford did not improperly use state money to pay for trips to New York and South America to see his Argentine mistress, state law enforcement officials concluded yesterday, as the governor reiterated that he has no plans to step down despite mounting pressure to do so.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division reviewed Sanford's travel records and "found absolutely no misuse of funds," agency director Reggie Lloyd said in an interview. Sanford (R), who is spending the holiday weekend in Florida with his wife and their four sons, released 44 pages of personal and official travel records and credit card statements yesterday showing that he did not use public money in connection with his extramarital affair.

He reimbursed the state $3,304 this week for part of an official state-sponsored trip to Brazil and Argentina in June 2008 during which he spent time with his mistress, Maria Belén Chapur, said Sanford's spokesman, Joel Sawyer.

I liked how Mr. Sandford explained his actions with the selfredemptive "I found my soulmate"..............How old is this guy, 17 ?.............

Yes. Unlike the rest of us, when he stole the money they allowed him to simply pay back and voila... no crime.

It's done all the time, in the private sector and in federal, state and local government. If you add a private segment to business travel, you just pay the difference. It's routine.

He buried that he did it and after he got caught using taxpayer money, ONE YEAR LATER he then paid it back. No, that isn't what's done all the time. That's stealing, getting caught and then allowed to skate out of it.

Sorry, but you're wrong. Depends entirely on the accounting/auditing system. I've seen this/done this in both the private sector and in the federal government. Sometimes you pay as you go; sometimes you reimburse after the auditors have done their calculations. And a year after the fact is not out of line in the latter case.

Just because a practice is common place, does that make it a right and acceptable action by a Governor?

It is right and acceptable for all civil servants in federal, state and local government, and it's right and acceptable in the private sector too.
