Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, whose long struggle with obesity has been raised as a political liability, secretly underwent weight-loss surgery three months ago, according to a statement from his office.

The surgery, which took place on Feb. 16, involved the placement of a silicone band around his stomach to reduce its size, limiting the amount of food he can take in but not altering his digestive process.

well, i suppose this answers one question about the 2016 race.

thoughts?

Or, he just wants to lose weight.

I've known people that looked into this, and it is brutal. This isn't an "easy" fix like some would suggest. In fact, I wonder why people don't just do the mandatory diet that follows the surgery.

I heard about a new "breakthrough" diet that the Governor may want to look into. Its called the DON'T-EAT-SO-DAMN-MUCH diet.

that's pretty much what i did in 2005. i wasn't heavy enough for surgery, and it would have been a mistake anyway. honestly, though, i wouldn't recommend it. just run a reasonable calorie deficit and exercise more. once the weight's off, keep doing it, but cut back the deficit some. that's the best way to keep weight off long term. starvation results in muscle loss, and it isn't sustainable.

I lost 40 lbs last year by using My Fitness Pal. It told me how many calories I was eating and I moderated from there. Easy-peezy. Was I ever hungry? Yes. Did I learn quickly to eat low calorie items to fill me up? Hellz to the ya. Plus I ate a lot of stuff that I didn't use to. Like, strawberry salad with raspberry vinaigrette, roasted salmon (at a steak place...are you kidding me?), chicken and so on.

Its funny, now I prefer the taste of a salad with fruit to a lot of the fatty foods I used to love.

Christie has an overactive spoon.

yep, i log everything i eat, also. even though i'm not trying to lose weight, it helps to keep it off. that site is great. one of my friends that i play in a band with has lost more than 90 pounds using MFP, as well.

Christie is not capable of getting the nomination. That said, great for him. He really looked like he could have a heart attack any day. That guy is/was huge--like fatter than the fat lady at the carnival huge.

Governor Christie is not likely to be a serious candidate for the Republican 2016 nomination unless he's also discovered a secret surgery that can remove his many liberal policy positions that also weigh him down.

He is an entertaining personality though - that's probably why many in the entertainment party, i.e. Democrats, seem to like him too.

This.

Isn't.

News.

I hope all goes well for him in this. Even though it's surgery for weight loss, it's not easy.

I could care less about someones weight.. (unless im watching porn)

Bet me $20, based on this information alone, that he runs in 2016?

Christie running for presidency in 2016 would be news.

This is not.

And unless this was the first thing you'd ever learned about the man, it could never be "based on this information alone." People have been speculating about him running for presidency for a long time now, so don't delude yourself into thinking this is some startling new insight you've come up with here. (hell, the 24 hour news channels have been talking about it all day)

I hope he does run for presidency. He's one of the few Republicans I think would stand a chance and also make a decent president.

I don't think he will run in 2016. 2020 or 2024 maybe. I think he will wait until his youngest couple kids get into college. I applaud him for addressing his weight. I am not sure the surgery was the way to best do that though. I have issues with that procedure.

He should be much more conservative and fly to argentinia on the taxpayers dime to marry a hooker, then he could get elected by conservatives.

He ain't gonna run. The Republicans' pick will, once again, be an overly-strategic one.

Rubio could be pants-on-head stupid, but hey...he's hispanic. That's far more important than his opinions. McCain is a closet liberal. The Republicans propped him up as their guy, in the hopes of stealing votes from liberals.

If there were such a thing as a Republican moderate female who was part black, part Mexican who grew up on food stamps and loves unions, the Republicans would have already nominated her. It's never about whether or not they'd be good for the country...it's about how many special interest groups they can relate to.

And yeah...people who troll on Christie because he's trying to get healthy are seriously horrible human beings. Leave the guy's private life alone.

Either that or molest the help in the Oval Office, lie like a dog when you're caught, and then you can become a Democrat icon.

It's more or less likely Christie will run in 2016 given that he just had a super-secret weight loss surgery?

When politicians try to keep secrets, there is always a reason.

Why is it news? Does nobody have any privacy? Not volunteering the fact that you have had "embarrassing" surgery isn't keeping it super secret, it's normal.

i don't disagree. i posted the article because it has been speculated that if he addressed his weight, it might be an indication of a presidential run in 2016. though i disagree with him politically, i hope that his weight loss journey is a success.

If memory serves, Reagan's colonoscopy result was deemed suitable for broadcast news. I don't recall such intimate personal details being broadcast about a British politician, maybe it's an American thing...
