Drug Agency Lowers Age For Next-Day Birth Control [W:297]

Yes. But buying Condoms and buying Plan B are similar.

Not at all. You don't swallow the condom. I was going to say condoms don't go inside the body, but that's not really true.

You really have to start paying attention to language used, such as "appears to be." LOL! I've never seen anybody put so much trust in the FDA and pharmaceutical companies before. Your stance on insisting that this drug is "safe" is just foolish. Below is just an example of some pills which have been on the market legally for YEARS with known dangerous side effects.

Do you not realize that these drug companies have lobbyists in Washington looking out for their best interests. This is just GREAT news for the pharmaceutical company who produces these pills, surely!

WorstPills.org -

We're not talking about other drugs. We're talking about Plan B

And the FDA does not have the authority to limit access to drugs based on what they might do. They can only limit access to drugs that the evidence shows is dangerous.

If they had to limit access to a drug because it might be dangerous, then everything would require a prescription

Well, anyway at least they did come up with a minimum age requirement. I feel better about a 15-year-old getting these pills without a prescription, a doctor visit or anything other kind of responsibility than say a 12-year-old.

I still see a potential for abuse among the younger age groups with these pills though; little things that can have a big impact, such as not feeling the need to use condoms thereby increasing the rate of sexually transmitted disease and overuse of this pill.

That's not true. Even Tylenol can be dangerous, and there is no prescription required for Tylenol.

Switch condoms to Tylenol. And then back again.

No difference between buying condoms AND Tylenol and planB. Better?

Again, perhaps you missed it, even Tylenol can be deadly if not taken as directed. Here we are trusting KIDS to take this drug responsibly.

And water. You forgot water

Water can be dangerous too

Drink too much water, and you can die

Normally people get sick before they would die from water intoxication. Also, you can drink water every day and never be sick from it. That is NOT the case with Tylenol OR Plan B.

At the price it sells at, Plan B is not going to be taken every day. In addition, it doesn't work if taken regularly, so there's no reason to take it every day.

Plan B is available to teens in other nations. None of them are taking it every day.

That wasn't the point. The point is you can't compare something relatively benign like water to a drug that can most certainly have negative and dangerous side effects.

I also have mixed feelings about this. I fully support a woman's (even a young one's) right to abortion and birthcontrol and all of that. My biggest concern is that some teenage girls will use Plan B as a regular form of birth control. That isn't what it is for and taking it too often could have harmful consequences. I hope that is printed in large letters across the box. Perhaps even have a public awareness campaign on it.

I highly doubt girls would use plan B as a regular form of birth control since Plan B costs about $40 to $50 and a months worth of b c pills is about $ 4. Condoms are much less expensive than Plan B and also help protect people from STDs also.

Some can be dangerous, but Plan B is not

Sorry, you are just simply wrong about this.

"The Plan B pills that Planned Parenthood and many university “health” systems sell like candy are NOT medicine. They are a very harmful and dangerous dosage of the hormonal steroid progestin that has already been proven to cause breast cancer, blood clots, cervical cancer, arterial plaque, and liver cancer in far lower dosages (birth control pills). Additionally, they deplete a woman’s body of bone mass and several important nutrients.

They have also been shown in several medical studies to cause birth defects, by way of a folic acid deficiency and negatively affecting the development of male organs due to the excess of female hormones in the mother’s bloodstream before she even knows she’s pregnant. Several recent studies have directly linked early maternal progestin intake with hypospadias (a birth defect of the penis), which continues a long list of other studies which have shown female steroids to cause malformations to the testes and prostate in utero.

Keep in mind that these have been observed in the children of women who were taking single pills forty to fifty times less potent than the huge 1.5 mg regimen of Plan B. And Plan B can remain in your system for many weeks, damaging anyone who may have survived its one mechanism of action that starves and expels an embryo after conception and/or disrupts his or her implantation.

But you won’t hear one word about any of this at Planned Parenthood or most university student health centers. Nor will they warn women that taking Plan B increases their chances of an ectopic pregnancy. The same people who will warn you not to have a single beer or cigarette while you think you might be pregnant nonetheless give you something far more harmful—and lie about it. Warning women of grave threats to their future health is bad for business. By the time your body tries to expel this harmful drug via vomiting, and you’re bleeding and depressed—they know you’ll keep quiet. You’ll be left to wonder for weeks if you are pregnant, and what you may have already done to your child if you are. Even if your cycle ever gets back to normal, you’ll be left to forever ponder the unanswerable question of what really happened.

Indeed, this corruption of scientific facts and medical ethics goes all the way up the politically influenced ladder to the Food and Drug Administration and the American Medical Association. That’s how it somehow became “logical” and “ethical” that although women need to have their blood tested for clotting agents with the low dose steroids, this very important precaution is skipped altogether in the case of a dosage fifty times more powerful.

Plan B is not really that much different than RU-486 if it is working after conception. They both are early abortion pills that can and do bring a unique, tiny human life to his or her unnatural end. Passing your child into the toilet or garbage is just less noticeable. But with human rights, size doesn’t matter. If your child does survive Plan B, Planned Parenthood and/or the university’s “health” system will have another “quick” fix for your “little” problem then, too. But they won’t inform you that surgical abortion causes preterm live births later in life—and thus countless more birth defects. That’s also bad for business."

Plan B and the Morning After Pills: The Truth Behind the Lies | Divine Caroline

" But if this ruling stands, any young child – as young as 12 or 13 years of age – is eligible to buy this medication without any restrictions or getting advice from a physician, a pharmacist, and more importantly, from their parents.
I mean, a school nurse can’t even give an aspirin without parental consent, and yet a federal judge says it’s okay for a 13-year-old to get emergency contraception without anyone saying anything about it? That’s absurd.
It was not that long ago that these types of hormonal contraceptive pills were given under medical prescription only – because these are real hormones with real side effects. Yes, I understand that the complication rates are minimal, and I was okay with the FDA making this an over-the-counter product. But I’m certainly not okay with allowing a young child to have access to these medicines.
First of all, how is a 13-year-old girl supposed to tell the difference between emergency contraception and birth control? In other words, Plan B is only to be used in case of an emergency, in which you may feel as if your regular form of birth control failed and there was a window of time when you may have gotten pregnant.
Birth control is more of a lifestyle choice, which involves taking birth control pills every single day. This effectively prevents ovulation, which ultimately yields the medication’s contraceptive effects. Even with all these differences, there are still many college kids today who do not plan out proper birth control strategies, but rely on this emergency contraceptive pill every time they have unprotected sex. This is not how it was intended to be used, and if older women can’t understand how to use it, it’s going to be even harder for younger teenagers.
There are side effects with Plan B, which include nausea, headaches and menstrual changes. While menstrual change in a 13- or 14-year-old girl is very common, if you introduce Plan B into the equation, it could make the effects even worse. Plan B can stop a period from happening all together, or prompt a lengthy menstrual cycle – which has complications unto itself.
And by the way, emergency contraception is not 100 percent effective. Effectiveness ranges anywhere between 89 to 94 percent. And for people who use this type of emergency contraception, if they don’t get their period after three or four weeks, they better do a pregnancy test, because you may not have taken it during the indicated window – and you may very well be pregnant.
Given all of this information, you mean to tell me a child of 13 is going to have that maturity to deal with these types of protocols? I think not. What this ruling is doing is placing young girls in danger, not only due to the potential issues that can arise from using emergency contraception, but also because of what it teaches them – or more specifically – what it doesn’t. It teaches them nothing about protecting themselves from sexually transmitted diseases, nothing about the strong values of sex education and nothing about respecting their bodies."

Now think about this....What problems could occur from girls being given this hypothetically without her knowledge....? Or, if the girl taking this has some sort of indicator of which she shouldn't be taking it and doesn't bother to read the box and takes it anyway?

This is absurd.

Maybe you should reread the link and what I said. But I'm not at all sure this will help if you don't even understand the basics and actually think this pill doesn't mess with female hormones.

I mean, really, Sangha. The pill IS a hormone, a synthetic progesterin hormone. The person who takes it is putting levonorgestrel-- and at a higher dose than levonorgestrel has been added previously in other pills--into her body, which already has naturally occurring female hormones.

And yet you claim that this synthetic hormone has no effect on female hormones.

The fact is it is the estrogen in BC pills that causes strokes , blood clots ,and other medical problems in women.

Since Plan just has progesterone it is safe .

Sure it is, if you want to increase your risk of breast cancer....

"Does Plan B cause breast cancer?

Ironically, this question has never been asked. Theoretically, this is certainly possible especially in women who use Plan B often as a method of “birth control.” How could this be? Plan B is composed of the hormone named levonorgestrel, which is a potent progestin which is also found in some of today’s birth control pills. Birth control pills have been declared a Class 1 carcinogen (ie, the most dangerous type) by the World Health Association in June, 2005. In addition, the most recent meta-analysis published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings (October, 2006) noted that taking the birth control pill before pregnancy results in a 44% increased risk of developing breast cancer prior to age 50. Finally, levonorgestrel’s progestin “cousin” (ie, Depo Provera) has been noted to increase breast cancer by 190% in women who take 12 shots prior to age 25 (JAMA, 1995: 799-804). These data theoretically implicate Plan B if taken often enough. In addition, when a woman takes Plan B she ingests 1.5 mg of levonorgestrel within a twelve hour period of time which is nearly equivalent to the amount of progestin contained in an entire month’s worth of some of today’s low dose birth control pills (ie, 1.925 mg)."

Facts About "Plan B"

Science shows that Plan B pill can lead to Ectopic Pregnancy (on the Plan B website). Ectopic Pregnancy could result in life threatening conditions.

Ok, it's safe.

Plan B is not effective once the process of implantation has begun. It will not affect an existing pregnancy or harm a developing fetus.

Plan B does not cause an Ectopic Pregnancy but:
If a woman experiences severe abdominal pain after taking Plan B® One-Step, she may have an ectopic pregnancy and should seek immediate medical attention.

Scaremongering of the lowest order should not deny women access to a drug with a better safety profile than many other freely available OTC medicines. The FDA remit is science, not superstition or morality.
