Drug Agency Lowers Age For Next-Day Birth Control [W:297]

it would make to difference to some of you if they lowered the age to 12.

you dont want parents to know their children are taking these drugs, and that is the simple that.

I wouldn't make a difference to me

If it makes a difference to any parent, then they should parent their child, and not expect the govt to do it for them

15 year olds having unprotected sex can also be complicated. If "the school, internet, peers, commercials, Planed Parenthood" hasn't already told her that unprotected sex is unwise they have already failed her. You appear to feel these groups can offer information that parents can't, and unjustifiably.
The question posed to me stipulated that the parents weren't providing the information. I strongly agree with you, that parents are generally the best source for socializing and information that children have. IMO parents should work to maintain an open door and be approachable to their children. I firmly believe that children who have approachable parents will go to their parent with this kind of problem and this policy change will do little if anything to alter that relationship.

If this were about abortion I would be right there with you, because an abortion is an invasive procedure and even 17 year-olds have to get consent for any other kind of procedure, or hell even an ear piercing or tattoo.

However, Plan-B is just a pill, and it does not cause an abortion, so I see no ethical dilemma in allowing 15 year-olds access to it.

well as stated before, a minor had to get permission from an adult to buy it for them...this means the parents knows the minor's situation, and makes the decision.

now the parents decision has been removed, because the minor can purchase with parental knowledge.

the individuals who like this, like the idea the parents are out of the loop.

we will then apply that to all drugs and alcohol, and expect the parent then to protect them.
The legal drinking age in Ireland is 16. Here in SD we're trying to lower it to 18.

As a general parenting philosophy, I train my children to be autonomous anyway. They do their own laundry, they do chores for money...many things. This fits right in.

i applaud you for your decision, however everyone is not the same

this is simply a decision, to get parents out of the loop of their control over the children, of the reproductive arena.

since it is a minor ..its their arena........when the child becomes an adult, it not.

There's a difference between drugs that have been shown to be harmful, and those that have not

why dont you just be honest, ...and that is you do not wish the parents, to know of any sexual activity of the child, by this minor being able to receive this drug.

if the parents wanted the child to have the drug, it can be freely obtained for them, this gets around those parents who do not want it for their child.

circumvention!

If you didn't give your consent before your child had sex in the first place, then I would say you're already out of the loop.

true, but by parental permission, my child, will need to info me, if she wishes it, so we can have a discussion of the subject, ..if this their is no discussion it remains a secret.

It sometimes takes a long time to learn that "safe" drugs are, in fact, harmful. Again, consider DES and early forms of "the pill." All perfectly safe...until the cancers and etc. began showing up.

And that's one point: We do not know what the long-term effects of Plan B will be. But we can look to the history of drugs which involve female hormones, and that history advises caution.

IOW, you want a Nanny State Govt to enforce your discipline

Actually, we do know what the long-term effects are. Plan B has been used for years. No long-term effects

And if the FDA used your reasoning, then no drug would ever be approved because "who knows!!", some problem might turn up later.

Say goodbye to new drugs for AIDS, cancer, and hundreds of other health problems.

That isn't the time to force communication. The emotions, familial politics and numerous misunderstandings take a lot longer than 3 days to work out, and by then there will be a pregnancy to further complicate things.

Preventing access causes more problems than allowing access.

That's an argument against all hormonal BC, not just this one BC used in this way.

I specified drugs that have an impact on female hormones and provided a specific example, DES. I can provide others, but I noted DES because although it hit the market in 1940, it wasn't until 1971 that we recognized the problem. And even then nobody knew that the children of women who took DES would be dealing with its problems too.

If there is a longitudinal study that details the long-term effects of Plan B on female adolescents, I'd be grateful if you would educate me.

None of the drugs you mentioned were Plan B, and they can't do longitudinal studies if they don't let people take the drug.

And if you think the FDA should test a drug for 31 years before allowing it to be sold, then say goodbye to most of drugs being used today.

BTW, progrestin-based contraceptives have been available in the US since at least 1998. That's 15 years. So far, no long term problems found

I am not willing for children to be the test cases. Are you?

And just FYI, "the pill" was on the market long, long before 1998. When I said "early forms" of "the pill," I wasn't talking about 1998, LOL.

But if you'd like, we can talk about Jaz or whatever it is and drugs similar to it.

as usual, false

So you won't test drugs on children, and you won't let drugs be given to children unless they're tested :screwy
