Jason Collins (NBA Center) announces that he is gay, altering the landscape of sports

Re: Jason Collins (NBA Center) announces that he is gay, altering the landscape of sp

Why is it bigotry? What is it about finding two men engaged in a lip lock disgusting, is bigoted? The thought of two men having anal sex causing other men to wince at that thought is now bigoted? Really? I know the narrative is to paint everyone a bigot that doesn't openly show love for the queer men, but lets be honest here, even people who seem indifferent on the subject wince at that visual. I would think that those that do not, are the weird one's, not the reverse.

Tim-

Fascinating.

You don't even recognize your own bigotry.

I would find two men engaged in a liplock to be disgusting as well, but I would find two hot girls making out to be the opposite. And neither has anything to do with my acceptance of them as people. A morbidly obese heterosexual couple kissing it up might make me want to hurl, and if I were forced to imagine them doing the nasty, I might need to hurl. But none of that has anything go do with bigotry. Bigotry is when a person is denied the same general treatment and common decency accorded to others based on your feelings about what you imagine them doing in private.

It's not surprising that gays are are becoming more accepted because it seems that even the most bigoted people learn compassion when they learn that a son or daughter or niece or nephew is gay, and as it becomes less socially crippling, more gay people are making their orientation known, so more people are learning this compassion.

It's just a shame that this is what is required for some people to understand that gay people are just people.

Re: Jason Collins (NBA Center) announces that he is gay, altering the landscape of sp

As I said earlier, I'm simply reporting on the problem. Not that I believe your comment for a second.

Reporting on what problem? Big egos and small men? Men who are failures as people do feel better when they pretend that everyone is out to look at their penises. Yet the sad reality is that they are compensating for something. What it is? Pretty much everything which gays on average tend to have a lot of - education, money, better social skills.

What utter nonsense. So you've created a connection between male on male anal and oral sex with education and social skills?

What world do you people live in?

Re: Jason Collins (NBA Center) announces that he is gay, altering the landscape of

Kind of fascinated by all comments going something along the lines of an ambivalent "who cares." Yeah, if nobody truly cared then homosexuals would not be ostracized in the world of sports or society at large.

"Who cares" in this case is just code for "living in my straight, hetero-normative privileged bubble, I lack the perspective to appreciate the extraordinary courage it took for him to come out and I think he is just another gay attention whore blah blah. I'm white, straight, and not in the NBA i deserve celebration too waaaah"

Re: Jason Collins (NBA Center) announces that he is gay, altering the landscape of sp

This is matter of comfort about changing around gay men, not really a matter of acceptance of being gay.

Most locker rooms these days do not have communal showers and offer plenty of opportunites for privacy for anyone who feels uncomfortable changing around other people. I always find it humorous that people would have no problem getting naked around closeted gay people but all of a sudden feel extremely uncomfortable changing around an openly gay person. Ignorance is bliss, I guess for some people.

I've had that feeling all day, SB.

"So what?" What do they mean so what? We just went through the repeal of DADT and it was hugely debated. It's no different in the world of male sports. It seemed very disingenuous to me.

I don't know how some people walk outside. Those "gays" are out there trying to undress me with their eyes. If I bend over to pick up a quarter, I know they will rape me.

Oh ya, just a sterotype. You are right Disney.

As much as I would like coed showers, I respect that most women would not like undressing in front of men.

I've also got a problem with all of these people who say that Jason Collins isn't a good basketball player. Here's some proof to the contrary:
1. He's got a great nose for loose balls
2. He always gets deep penetration, and knows how to finish
3. He's got some size, and takes it to the rim with authority
4. The guy knows 100 different ways to score: you never really know what he's going to do when he's down there

Re: Jason Collins (NBA Center) announces that he is gay, altering the landscape of sp

Okay, this has been ALL over the news. Why? I give him credit for coming out in a tougher than usual situation, sure, but this is really not worthy of the coverage and attention it has been getting IMO. Must be a slow news week.

No, no. That is you being unable to comprehend what you're reading.

Re: Jason Collins (NBA Center) announces that he is gay, altering the landscape of sp

Well there goes his career.. But seriously, who cares? :)

Tim-

This is actually the one annoying thing about this and why I don't think, in reality, it'll be THAT impactful.

His career had a GOOD chance of being gone already. He's a 34 year old bench player who barely got playing time with one of the worst teams in the league.

What's annoying is that if he doesn't play again we'll likely have people proclaiming it as proof that sports was out to get Gay people...when in reality it could very easily have nothing to do with it.

I'm happy he can finally be honest in public about himself. However, in terms of sports impact, I think it won't be felt strongly until an actual active player does it...not someone who, for all intents and purposes, is likely at the end of their career.

Re: Jason Collins (NBA Center) announces that he is gay, altering the landscape of sp

I honestly do not care....

Ok you are gay....now why didn't you block that shot? Why are you slow as hell getting to from one side of the court to the other? What does your sexuality have to do with the game of basketball?

I don't think athletes should share their sexuality. It is a personal issue. No need to make it public and get the media circus around whatever team you are on. As a sports fan...I only care if you contribute to the team WINNING games...I could care less who is in your bedroom. Matter of fact...I don't want to know that.

And it's not like he was/is that great a player anywho...

career stats: 3.6 points per game 3.8 rebounds per game. this season: 1.1 points per game 1.6 rebounds per game. For a guy who is 7' tall, that's not very impressive.

He's a mediocre player for one of the worst teams in the league.

And yet, if he doesn't go on to play for another 5 years it's going to be because he's discriminated against because he's gay

I read exactly what you wrote.

Re: Jason Collins (NBA Center) announces that he is gay, altering the landscape of sp

It's sadly pathetic, this neediness for so many to be the star of their own reality show, to Facebook and tweet virtually every detail of their lives to a world that doesn't care more than 1/2 a second. Even more pathetic is that these same people don't respect the opinions and judgment of those they tell.

There was a time when privacy, restraint, and composed measure were among the most revered qualities in a person. In fact, it still is among the few refined, well-reared people left.

washed-up, injury prone, has-been desperately seeking attention anounces he is gay. big ****ing deal.....

1st active player of one of America's four major sports leagues to identify himself as homosexual, Jason Collins was a journeyman NBA center, all but unknown to anyone but the sport's dedicated followers.

Jason Collins Rumors & Injury Update | #98 - SportsOverdose

bolded says it all. until this announcement...not many people even knew who he was.

"journeyman NBA center" ...

Professional sportsmen are sometimes called journeymen. It is not a technical or well-defined designation, instead it is generally given to players who are skilled enough to remain in pro sports but not skilled enough to earn themselves a permanent position on a team.

Yeah, and I don't see the big deal. How is this "earth shattering" or how is he being "so brave" and blah blah blah everything else people keep saying. Being gay is more acceptable than being atheist these days. ****, you get Tillman-ed for that.

Nothing brave about a guy at the end of his career making this kind of announcement. Brave would have been coming out during the height of his career (not that he ever really had one) when he actually had something to lose.

hmmm
welll it seems early but id say it alters things quite bit "IF" he gets a contract because he will be the first openly gay player ever

that along with all the books, documentaries, interviews etc of former players and how fearful they wear, how even suspect gays were treated in the past this could "potentially" alter the landscape of sports because now athletes would be more willing not to live a lie.

That my guess on what the article means anyway and it seems pretty logical to me.

I dont know what do you think?

He's not gay. There's no such thing as a gay (or straight) person. There is only homosexual and heterosexual behavior.

The practice of labeling oneself according to artificial categories is both childish and primitive.
