Singer George Jones, whose 'He Stopped Loving Her Today' is regarded by many as the greatest country song ever recorded, charted dozens of hits over a long career marked by struggles with alcohol and drugs, broken marriages and, finally, redemption.

His song "He Stopped Loving her today" is called the perfect Country and Western Song by many. We will miss you George.

NOTE: Looks like he finally got over her for good this time.

George Jones lived life hard. Amazed he made it to 81.

Saw ol' "No Show Jones" in concert before.

For those that don't know much about him he was called No Show Jones and even wrote a song about it. He was such a raging drunk that if he didn't open the show then he'd very likely be too drunk to perfom after the opening act. He'd be a complete no show. So he decided to always be the opening act even if he was the headliner just to make sure he'd be able to perform.

I heard a comment he made on his drinking.

He drank so much in the 70's that if you saw him sober, he must have been asleep. :p
Ole Possum

Despite some personal problems, one of the greats in country western. He will be missed.

I always liked the corvette (hotter than a two dollar pistol)

"Then I handed him my keys and said, here take her for a spin
The old man scratched his head, then he looked at me and grinned
He said son you just don't understand it ain't the car I want
It's the brunette in your 'vette that turns me on

There are a lot of musicians like that. A couple of years ago, I was with a band called 90 Miles In. We were voted best band at the Magnolia Music Festival. Why? Because the guy we opened up for that day of the festival, Johnny Rodriguez, was passed out in his trailer, and his band had to do the whole gig without him. LOL.

I'm going to miss him. He was one of the greats.

The things a woman can make you do...eh?

When I was younger, I wasn't a fan of either him or Tammy. But I was wrong and am appreciative of both their contributions now. Ha, now I'm generally not a fan of "rhinestone cowboy"/"New Country"/whatever. Kinda ticks me off when some pretty boy who wouldn't know a John Deere from your Uncle John is out doing his pop-rock-psuedo country thang.

I am not a big fan of todays country (big&rich, etc.). Makes me appreciate Jones, Waylon, Willie, Cash, much more.

Think George S. and Alan J. summed it up well it this song.

So great, and I haven't heard this in a long time. Thanks!

I never realized how tall Alan Jackson was before. From that camera angle it makes him look like he is a giant over George.

George was pretty short.

Well, I always appreciated the "outlaws." Here's Townes Van Zandt's gorgeous poem:

Bunch of posers. Bugs the crap out of me how people who talk with bizarre accents and whatnot all of a sudden find a twang in their signing because they are selling that image. They aren't finding their voice. They are finding a scene and pretending a voice. Annoying.

Well put. So well put.

On the other hand there are rock groups who do a fair bit of posing, along with folk groups, reggae types, gangsta rappers and so on.

The image comes first.

That's what's so sad--that it's not the music that comes first.
