WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) and Congressman Frank Lucas (R-OK-3) today introduced in their respective chambers the Ammunition Management for More Obtainability (AMMO) Act of 2013. The legislation would require the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to conduct a report on the purchasing of ammunition by federal agencies, except the Department of Defense, and its effect on the supply of ammunition available to the public. The AMMO Act would restrict agencies from obtaining additional ammunition for a six-month period if current agency stockpiles are higher than its monthly averages prior to the Obama Administration.

It's about time....With progressive liberals losing the battle to restrict American's 2nd Amendment rights, they took a parallel track to attack the amendment through buying up all the ammunition used for the most popular weapons most people legally own. It was a transparent attempt to, if not limit ammunition for sale, it was at the least designed to cause shortages that drive prices up.

I'd like to know why DHS needs so much ammo? Reports have placed the amount at 1000 rounds per person more than our military uses...That is stunning. What's it for?

Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Thursday that the Department of Homeland Security is using roughly 1,000 rounds of ammunition more per person than the U.S. Army, as he and other lawmakers sharply questioned DHS officials on their "massive" bullet buys."It is entirely ... inexplicable why the Department of Homeland Security needs so much ammunition," Chaffetz, R-Utah, said at a hearing.
The hearing itself was unusual, as questions about the department's ammunition purchases until recently had bubbled largely under the radar -- on blogs and in the occasional news article. But as the Department of Homeland Security found itself publicly defending the purchases, lawmakers gradually showed more interest in the issue.
Democratic Rep. John Tierney, D-Mass., at the opening of the hearing, ridiculed the concerns as "conspiracy theories" which have "no place" in the committee room.
But Republicans said the purchases raise "serious" questions about waste and accountability.

So demo's ridicule, shocking! That is what they always do when they get caught isn't it?

I still dont understand why DHS needs all this ammo.

Cities buy their own, states buy their own.Why do the feds need so much?

Course I'm not real bright.:2razz:

Re: Inhofe, Lucas Introduce Bill Limiting Federal Agencies From Stockpiling Ammunitio

Several bogus issues bound together in a grandstanding attempt to pander to the tin foil hats in the extreme right wing.

EVERY spring there are ammo shortages as those who start their shooting season begin to think about getting ammo. Is why the more experienced of us buy BEFORE the SHOT Show. Much of this year's shortage can be laid directly at the feet of the 'gun' toting sheeple who panic buy at the slightest provocation, the NRA's firearms lobby must cackle at the very idea of 'stand-up' Patriots so easily panicked.

To me the 1,000 rounds more per person than the Army is truly sad... it tells me the Army is now so REMF filled the vast majority are just civilians who learned how to salute. :(

Gotta love the acromyn though... AMMO, some staffer got an atta-boy for that!

Your reports are wrong. Congratulations on believing every dip**** email forward you receive!

Even better that your favorite representatives are falling for the same **** and submitting bills before they actually figure out what's going on.

Then enlighten us....Why does the DHS need 1.7 Billion rounds of ammunition?

HAHAHAHA!

Next thing you know the extreme right wing will be claiming that the Obama administration told gun sellers to illegally sell a couple thousand AK-47s and high-powered handguns to criminals so that they could be walked over the border and into the hands of Mexican drug lords! Their conspiracy theories never cease!

HAHAHAHA!

How about you go take some personal responsibility and go find out how you've been mislead. You'll just dismiss anything I say and I really don't care to hear your excuses about why you insist it's still all suspicious. Or cling to the conspiracy theory, I really don't care.

So you can't answer the question...Figures.

Huh, when you said a couple of thousand AK's I thought you was talking about all the weapons and millions in cash we sent to Iraq that seems to have just disappeared into the sands like all those WMD the BushII administration claimed were there.

Now I can't find where 'a couple thousand AK-47s and (high-powered) handguns' were sold to Mexican drug cartels...the high-powered I put into parenthesis as I would love to know what a high powered handgun is and how many of those were sold south of the border....

Are you like that 13 year olf going to her first 'real' dance and putting a few tissues into the bra... yanno trying to make a mountain out of a molehill???? :)

Maybe you could answer why DHS needs 1.7 billion rounds of ammo?

Maybe you could answer why DHS needs 1.7 billion rounds of ammo?

There it is. All lullabies, legends and lies. There is no way in hell DHS needs more or even close to the same amount of ammunition as the U.S. Army per man.

I just love how the Obamaphiles come in here and call everyone names, but won't answer a simple question...

Good evening, Risky Thicket. :2wave:

It's been suggested that the DHS is doing the buying to keep legal gun owners from buying the ammunition they need for their guns, because of the shortages it is causing. Very possible, I guess. Any alternative reason for doing this is food for nightmares, IMO, and I am certain that it makes people uneasy to even think of the other possibilities for the huge amount they are buying!

If congress already knows how much ammo the DHS has then why do they need a report?

"Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Thursday that the Department of Homeland Security is using roughly 1,000 rounds of ammunition more per person than the U.S. Army...."

I say go for it....end the DHS. The public didn't need or want it anyway.

This was answered in another thread awhile back, I'm sure you read about it.

you can go read online about it, hot Air did a piece on it.

Basically the Department of Homeland Security is a blanket organization for a myriad of government agencies(22) and their training programs.

DHS didn't buy 1.6 to 2 billion rounds, they put out an option to buy 1.6 billion over a, and pay attention here, over a 5 year period. Think of it as a stock option with primers. It only makes sense a huge law enforcement group such as DHS which also has the Border Patrol as part of it's organization put out contracts to hold a certain amount of ammo to be available each year. (given the panic buying many are engaging in at every rumor it only makes sense)

But even so EVERY governmental agency tendered multi-year contracts for bulk consumables it can estimate it will need in the future.

The National Review has an article by Charles Cooke where he quotes the NRA as dismissive of the 'threat'.

I hope you investigate this a bit for yourself and not just the rabble rouser websites and bloggers.

Hey Polgara!

I agree.

The economy isn't in the greatest shape. You may have noticed. :wink3: If, if, the Net went down, if the nation experienced a bank run or things like that, I could see why the government would want more and more public/social control.

The government either works for the people or it doesn't.

Why does congress cater to conspiracy theory's

Conspiracy theories? Why the denial? :notlook: Do government agencies need to stockpile enough ammo for a thirty year war?

Or maybe you can share the logical reasoning for the massive amounts of ammo purchases by the US government?

To put that in perspective, during the height of active battle operations in Iraq, US soldiers used 5.5 million rounds of ammunition a month. Extrapolating the figures, the DHS has purchased enough bullets over the last 10 months to wage a full scale war for almost 30 years.

Alax jones is the one pushing this conspiracy? How does that make this story credible in any way? It is pure conspiracy theory.

Judging from how our elected officials are acting, they've stopped working for the people...it's all Party now. And it's frightening to think that Martial Law would ever be needed for the majority of us, who are mostly law-abiding, decent people. :scared:

LOL well, that thar is yer source right thar.....Alex Jones, king of conspriacy nuts. Congress seems to have way too much time on their hands if this is the kind of nonsense they're spending their time and our tax dollars on.

Say, why don't they just vote themselves a longer recess....like say nine months out of the year since they're incapable of governing and doing more harm than good, anyway?
