White House Endorses Online Sales Tax

the hill, brian lamb's favorite source at cspan:

The White House on Monday endorsed legislation that would give states greater authority to tax Internet retailers located outside their borders.

Jay Carney, the White House press secretary, told reporters that the proposal would correct an unfair advantage currently held by online outlets, who are only required to collect sales taxes from customers in states where they have a physical presence.

The Senate is expected to take a procedural vote on the bill, called the Marketplace Fairness Act, on Monday.

“This administration has carefully considered the legislation, and our team has met with a broad array of people on the issue,” Carney said. “And we have heard overwhelmingly from governors, mayors and the business community on the need for federal legislation to level the playing field for our businesses and address sales tax fairness.”

this administration has never even as much as remotely imagined a tax it didn't love

oh, he promised he'd never touch anyone over 200K, couples 250

here, he just calls on the states to do so

he's getting called out left and right for putting the squeeze on the middle class in almost every conceivable way

    Obama's Budget Shows His Middle-Class Tax Pledge Was A Fraud - Investors.com

politico says it as well as anyone: "there’s simply not enough revenue to pull from top earners to truly tackle the nation’s deficit"

“there’s only so much money you can get out of the upper-income brackets, the big money comes from the rank-and-file taxpayers”

it's in his failure to adjust for inflation, ie, bracket creep

it's the capping of deductions, the limits on retirement accounts

the taxes and higher premiums brought to you by obamacare

    at least he's consistent

that is, hiking taxes is all that remains for him even semi credibly to talk about in public

except he can't really say tax the rich anymore

    he's reduced to just tax

he can't talk about guns, he can't move gay marriage, he's necessarily mute on global warming

did you hear about fisker this morning (of course not, you were too busy talking, you got it all figured out)

Obama Administration Missed Clues on Fisker - ABC News

he knew for months it was good money after bad yet kept on digging, a half billion dollars of taxpayers' money taxpayers do not have---just like solyndra, just like beacon and ener1 and abound and a123 and bright source and evergreen and all the others---all because he knows better cuz he's so much smarter and we don't really understand what we're all about

and because one of the partners is a mega donor who sits on one of his advisory boards...

he'd like to talk about universal preschool and his cigarette tax, but they look so trivial compared to the scale of our crises, he comes off dumb

if immigration is to move he must stay away, marco rubio will get half the credit

he can't agitate over the sequester, not after the faa was called out for a half bil in new sustainability programs so dear to faculty lounges at harvard and the university of chicago

Amid FAA furloughs, Dems, GOP revive sequester blame game - CBS News

and as disconnected from mom's and pop's reality as california's homeless bill of rights

and where can he go---he can't be seen flying that beast, accompanied by that obscene entourage

not after closing the white house to the gradeschoolers cuz we're all so broke

he really blew it bitching sequester---he's not gonna be able to party half as much as before

he can't talk women---his opponents will scream gosnell, late term, pp

he can't talk terror, can't pronounce jihad, can't contemplate islamic terrorism

which rules out an awful lot of foreign policy

events simply are not cooperating with the yes-we-can man

so it's all TAX, it's all that's left

    go for it!

but not much of an agenda for a nation perceiving itself at existential crossroads---economically, culturally, politically

and the tax chase just makes for another quixote, with as much chance of realization

barack obama is demonstrably not up to his times, can you deny it?

    embarrassed yet?

The internet sales tax makes perfect sense. If it were up to me, it would be on every commercial transaction.

I'm stunned that online purchases sans sales tax went on for as long as it did. Anyone who thought it would be that way forever was extremely naive.

Anywhere and anytime they can tax, they will. The monster wants more money.

If you're old enough to have been purchasing online for a good number of years, give thanks for how much money you've saved to this point.

In my experience, the shipping costs typically equated to what the taxes would have been. Online is a matter of convenience.

Is this the start to taxing the internet?

Re: White House Endorses Online Sales Tax

While I understand the motive, this will be a total disaster for online merchants as there are tens of thousands of taxing jurisdictions and they tend to be extreme!

For example, when my wife was in business she has to report (only) local and state sales for sales tax for her online sales. If she was 1 day late, there was an automatic $50 fine. Even if the tax due was $3. And, virtually every month they declared she had been late - when she never was - so would be on the phone for at least an hour and having to send and resent her proof. Multiply that by a couple thousand if it was nationwide - plus she would need probably 20,000 reporting forms on file to go thru each month.

UNLESS the law creates ONE central reporting and payment method for ALL sales taxes nationwide, this will be a real disaster.
