(Reuters) - A block housing garment factories and shops collapsed in Bangladesh on Wednesday, killing nearly 100 people and injuring more than a thousand, officials said.
Firefighters and troops dug frantically through the rubble at the eight-storey Rana Plaza building in Savar, 30 km (20 miles) outside Dhaka. Television showed young women workers, some apparently semi-conscious, being pulled out.
One fireman told Reuters about 2,000 people were in the building when the upper floors slammed down onto those below.

this is both tragic and infuriating.

in my opinion, tariff-free access to our markets should require OSHA compliance for overseas manufacturing.
 
All of these 3rd world scab countries, including Mexico, should have exactly the same regulations America has. That would bring our jobs right back home.
 
if the jobs come back, they will be done by machines, most likely. however, that's no excuse for rewarding this kind of behavior with our consumer dollars.

what's even more infuriating is that it's very difficult to avoid buying clothing made under these conditions. pretty much everything is made there or somewhere with similarly poor working conditions. i don't want someone getting killed to make the next shirt i buy.

You mean the same kind of regulations that were in place on that west Texas fertilizer plant that exploded? The west fertilizer plant that was not inspected in over 5 years

I was alive during a time (the eighties), when that choice still technically existed. Good luck now. I can still get locally grown vegetables at the Farmer's Market, but I think that's pretty much it.
 
It's such a sad incident... There was news of earthquakes as well few days back
