Boston bombing suspect cites U.S. wars as motivation, officials say

This comes as no surprise to me, I think you'll see more of this in the years to come. There appears be no connection to a foreign organization.

Boston bombing suspect cites U.S. wars as motivation, officials say - The Washington Post

The 19-year-old suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings has told interrogators that the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan motivated him and his brother to carry out the attack, according to U.S. officials familiar with the interviews.

From his hospital bed, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has acknowledged his role in planting the explosives near the marathon finish line on April 15, the officials said. The first successful large-scale bombing in the post-Sept. 11, 2001, era, the Boston attack killed three people and wounded more than 250 others.

The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe an ongoing investigation, said Dzhokhar and his older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was killed by police as the two attempted to avoid capture, do not appear to have been directed by a foreign terrorist organization.

I think the US has been concerned about home grown islamic radicalism for some time now. I think the somali population in the MW was of particular concern, due to the fact many are refugees. The rest of our immigration from those areas usually concern people who are rather highly educated and coming here to seek professional opportunities and a slice of the "american dream".

    1. I think we should be cautious about drawing complete conclusions at this point. Assuming Dzhokhar actually made these comments, he is telling the story from his perspective and he may not have had complete insight into his older brother's experiences and motivations. Therefore, while the younger brother may have thought they were doing this in response to the wars, his older brother - who appears to be the leader at this point - may have had other ideas that he didn't share with his brother.

    2. If frustration with the wars did play a part, I'm not surprised.

    3. It is likely, as much as we wish it were otherwise, that their motives and the catalysts of their behavior do not boil down to a single frustration, religion, ethnicity or other factor in their lives. On the contrary, their behavior is culmination of a variety of factors that likely include their mental states, their home life, their older influences, their interactions with friends and so on. In other words, the causes of this will be complex and simplifying those causes to a single thing whether it is "oh, they were pissed about the wars" or "oh, they were Chechen Muslims" is wrongheaded.

There appears to be no connection at this time, but we are also getting statements from the younger brother. The older brother is the one who travelled to Russia so we do not know who he met and how he was influenced. The older brother could have very well had ties and just not told his younger brother.

I just think its too soon to tell. However, I will also admit we are not privy to all the details at this time either that have been collected.
