In addition to the mourners, union members and a local motorcycle club showed up to stop a church group from disrupting the funeral.
The Westboro Baptist Church, notorious for picketing famous funerals and public events to promote an anti-gay ideology, was there. The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated Westboro Baptist Church as a hate group.

No. You can make this **** up. There are millions of "religion variants" registered as "non-profits".

I'm not arguing with you. I'm on your side. But that is how it works. "Baptist" is just another word like "Christian".

I'm very happy to see this. If unions want to improve their image, there are ways. This particular one is a great one. And that they compromised with Hostess is another. Maybe unions are seeing that working with people instead of against them better serves their end game.
 
WBC may just not get out of Boston alive.....we can only hope!

While there are some organized Baptist denominations, any group or church could call itself Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, or anything else they want to.

I am certain every Baptist denomination and basically every baptist would decry that group's activity.

I think there are independent Baptists who aren't really affiliated with anyone but will call themselves by that title.

I never understood these counter pickets, and do disagree with something seemingly intended to silence an unpopular view.

For example, In the Snyder case, the father wasn't even aware of the counter protest prior to seeing it on the news

i suppose i just figured that there was some minimal qualification to call your group "Baptist." can a group of people who choose to worship a stick of celery call their church "Baptist" without getting sued?

Names mean nothing - it is meeting the IRS requirements for religious exemption.

Ironic that this is NOT what Jesus taught, isn't it? However, I wouldn't paint most Christians with that broad brush. Just some. You saying something like this is the same thing as somebody saying that Islam is evil because of the actions of a few.

Im not talking about what some guy named Jesus taught, im talking about those that call themselves "christians" and dont act like christian.

Just look at some of the topics on homosexuals here at DP. You'll see hate and ignorance. Pfffttt!! they have the nerve to call themselves christians, but you know, i cant really fault that because THEIR religion tells them this. It all goes back to "pick and choose" what you want to hate.

Again you are painting them ALL with a broad brush, which makes you no different than the haters who paint Islam with the same kind of brush.

In order to sue someone for calling themselves "Baptist", you have to prove that you own the concept of being a Baptist. There's no one Baptist organization that has the legal authority to make that claim, so anyone can claim to be Baptist and there's really nothing anyone else can do about it. On the other hand, Mormons and Scientologists absolutely could sue someone for representing themselves as being Mormon or Scientologist without belonging to their specific organization.
