It's fine to be offended. I don't think it's fine to arrest the young man for being a jerk. Talk is cheap and people are often offensive, that doesn't mean they should be locked up for it each and every time. This was, imo, a minor verbal altercation.

Put the idiot in handcuffs, give him a warning and send him on his way.

You know what offends me? common curtsey.... Why cant some people hold a door for another? that - /or if someone drops something pick it up for them.... Those little things make/break the character and individual.

I completely understand the law regarding this. I still think the kid should have been handcuffed, warned and released with nothing more than an embarrassing experience.

Never said that, but people often talk big. If the guy wanted to strike the Jews guy, he had every opportunity to do so. He didn't so anything but talk smack.

He said he was going to kill the guy and got physical with him, stealing his phone.

When faced with the option of either assuming that you are a descent person that failed to read the whole account or a miserable person that finds nothing wrong with thuggery I gave you the benefit of the doubt.

You're right, he was wrong for doing that. Hitting him with hate crime charges is way overboard imo. The guy is 17. Having a felony on your record is a terrible starting place.

That is a terrorist threat and it is ilegal, however they did not charge him with that.

If they didn't do anything and later he did kill the guy, the pólice department would have been held liabel for the action as the suspect said he was going to do it.

Absolutely. Very few actually think that the girl taunting the police as they do their job, or the original guy threatening the Jewish man, and stealing his cell phone, did anything wrong....I don't know whether it is hatred of Jews in this case, or that kind of selfish, OWS mindset that people like this see something they want, and decide its ok to just take it.

I saw a trailer for a new movie coming out soon, that sums it up pretty good...

I disagree. The situation quickly moved from being some punk kid talking smack to an entirely different level, i.e., "communicating a threat," the moment the teen threatened to kill an innocent passenger on a public commuter train before several witnesses to boot. A stupid act for sure!

Perhaps the judge will let him off with a warning due to his age, the fact that he didn't follow through with his threat (with ample time to do it until the train reached its next stop) and the fact that the situation didn't truly become violent until the police arrived on the scene. That's when things turned ugly.

I wouldn't have dismissed it. Sometimes, you just have to teach the nuckleheads a lesson. In this case, let the young man stand before a judge. If he has no priors, community service w/6-months probation oughta do it.
