The US Secret Service says it has intercepted a letter addressed to President Barack Obama that contained a "suspicious substance".Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said on Wednesday that the letter was intercepted at a facility away from the White House. He says the letter was received on Tuesday.
"This facility routinely identifies letters or parcels that require secondary screening or scientific testing before delivery," Donovan said.
"The Secret Service is working closely with the US Capitol Police and the FBI in this investigation."

Washington (CNN) -- White House mail handlers identified a "suspicious substance" in a letter sent to President Barack Obama the same day one suspected of containing the poison ricin was found in a Senate mailroom, the Secret Service said Wednesday. Both letters arrived Tuesday at off-site postal facilities set up after the 2001 anthrax attacks and have been sent to laboratories for additional tests, authorities said.
"A letter addressed to the president containing a suspicious substance was received at the remote White House mail screening facility," Secret Service spokesman Brian Leary said. The Secret Service, FBI and Capitol Police are investigating, he said.

First Wicker, now Obama? What the hell is going on?

Copycat? Or phase 2 of a larger plan?

Copycat? Or phase 2 of a larger plan?

No idea. Reminds me of the anthrax threat after 9/11.

Re: Another suspicious letter found, this one to Obama

Somebody probably sent him a copy of the Constitution.

Re: Another suspicious letter found, this one to Obama

Mailing poison is a lax, almost pointless attempt, imo. All of that mail goes through a screening process that would make even TSA green with envy. And I would think that anyone who can get their hands on something like ricin without getting busted would be intelligent enough to get that.

Re: Another suspicious letter found, this one to Obama

Just heard on the radio that Chuck Schumer received one as well.

Seriously? God damn.

Re: Another suspicious letter found, this one to Obama

What kind of idiot thinks you can just mail a letter to the president and he'll personally open and read it?

Re: Another suspicious letter found, this one to Obama

I'm always a bit cynical about these claims. Are we sure these actually exist? We never actually see them.

Hey, everybody, I received anthrax in my phone bill yesterday. Trust me.

lol, now you are just making conservatives look bad by saying it was a con that sent in the constitution.

They were never caught either. I wonder if its the same prople and if its connected to the Boston attack.

The one to Obama has now been confirmed as ricin as well. And this:

The bulletin said both letters included the phrase: "To see a wrong and not expose it, is to become a silent partner to its continuance."
Both were signed, "I am KC and I approve this message."

According to one senator, they have a suspect in mind. Female. Interesting they would divulge this information.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A letter addressed to President Barack Obama carrying traces of a suspicious substance was received at a White House mail screening facility on Tuesday and preliminary tests showed it contained the deadly poison ricin, the FBI said on Wednesday.

An FBI statement said that an envelope addressed to the president and "containing a granular substance that preliminarily tested positive for ricin" had been received.

The facility where the letter was received is remote and is not near the White House, Secret Service spokesman Edwin Donovan said in a statement.

"This facility routinely identifies letters or parcels that require secondary screening or scientific testing before delivery," he said.

"The Secret Service is working closely with the U.S. Capitol Police and the FBI in this investigation."

On Tuesday U.S. authorities had intercepted a letter sent to Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker that preliminary tests showed contained ricin.....snip~

I am glad the have a suspect in mind already. I hope they can stop this person before they hurt somebody or turn to violence.

1) Prominent figure in American society and world culture

2) Leader of a country

3) Leader of the most powerful country in the world

I'm pretty sure you can count this as legitimate.

It also makes a sympathetic figure out of the recipient immediately.

I'm just throwing it out there. I always have that thought when I hear of these.

People should know that this wouldn't work. It's been tried before, and the security with mail to our public officials is pretty tight.

To run the conspiracy theory on this, there were no ricin letters, the government is just continuing to release reports that it has to whip up more frenzy after the Boston attack so that when they propose even more drastic government intervention and curtailing of rights; people will be less likely to oppose them.

Heheh....I think I could do this for a living. How much does Glenn Beck make?

True, and that ups the theory that this is a false flag attack by our own government. Not saying that the theory is credible in any way, but more people are going to believe it just for that very reason.

Re: Another suspicious letter found, this one to Obama

Something else. You don't have to get your hands on ricin in order to launch a terrorist attack. Just grind up some whole castor beans which, while they contain minute traces of ricin, are harmless. That will also trigger the detectors. Could be some nut attempting to do this.

Re: Another suspicious letter found, this one to Obama

All it says is the police have a suspect in mind. Doesn't say anything about an arrest nor even a suspect being taken into Custody.

Senator: Police have suspect in ricin mailing.....

WASHINGTON (AP) — Police have a suspect in mind as they investigate a letter mailed to Sen. Roger Wicker that tested positive for poisonous ricin, a Senate colleague said.

"The person that is a suspect writes a lot of letters to members," Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said Tuesday as she emerged from a classified briefing.

Authorities declined to comment on a suspect or any other aspect of the investigation being led by Capitol Police and the FBI after tests indicated that a letter mailed to the Mississippi Republican's Washington office contained the potentially deadly toxin. The letter was intercepted at a Senate mail facility in Prince George's County, Md., just outside Washington, said Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, a member of the Senate's Democratic leadership.

Terrance Gainer, the Senate's sergeant-at-arms, said the envelope bore a Memphis, Tenn., postmark but had no return address or suspicious markings.

Mail from a broad swath of northern Mississippi, including Tupelo, Oxford and DeSoto County, is processed and postmarked in nearby Memphis, according to a Postal Service map. The Memphis center also processes mail for residents of Western parts of Tennessee and eastern Arkansas.

Milt Leitenberg, a University of Maryland bioterrorism expert, said ricin is a poison derived from the same bean that makes castor oil. According to a Homeland Security Department handbook, ricin is deadliest when inhaled. It is not contagious, but there is no known antidote.....snip~
