How to turn your phone into a biometric scanning machine

(CNN) -- Smartphones are powerful tools, and with the right apps and accessories, they can become even more so. A California-based tech company has launched a tool that turns a regular iPhone 4 or 4S into a powerful biometrics scanning tool. AOptix has unveiled its app and a wrap-around device for turning the smartphone into a portable iris, face, fingerprint and voice scanner.
The hardware and software system, the first of its kind for the iPhone, is called AOptix Stratus, which comprises both the iOS app which will cost $199 and a wrap around device for an iPhone 4 or 4S. The app uses the iPhone camera to snap pictures of faces and record voices, while there's an extra camera that does iris scanning and a small sensor to scan fingerprints. AOptix will also release a software development kit to its customers so they can customize the app to their own needs.

Who finds the possibilities of this as chilling as I do?

I don't find it chilling at all. What's anyone going to do with it? It'll be useful for law enforcement -- who can actually access databases that will let comparisons run. For the rest of us? What do you find chilling? And for law enforcement as an identifying tool? What do you find chilling?

I find it chilling because the ease and simplicity of developing tracking an identification applications, and with social media as it is, can you see a scenario where fingerprints or iris scans are part of Facebook accounts or whatnot? Seems like an accelerated segway into a eerily Big Brother kind of world.

In some ways, it's kind of empowering. It's not like these things weren't used by law enforcement before, now it's there for everybody. At least that's the argument with guns.

Yes, because identity theft and online predatorial behavior are just a myth.

    Grow up.

Re: How to turn your phone into a biometric scanning machine

Technology inevitably will trump the kind of privacy that enhances law enforcement. I remember when they could barely access fingerprints and cops had to find a pay phone to call for backup. Now we have radar guns, facial recognition, license plate readers, helicopters, night vision goggles, infra-red systems, central databases, DNA testing et al.

    Even then, crime continues unabated.

So, if this bothers you, commit your crimes VERY carefully or don't commit them at all.

Let's think about this for a second......

..you're at the grocery store and that person in front of you looks familiar. You're also getting the impression that he or she is thinking the same thing. Both of you currently have your children and/or significant other with you. At some point one of you says "I think I know you but don't know where from" and the other says "I was thinking the same thing. I happen to have a biometric scanner app on my phone and the curiosity is killing me".

So there you are, in the middle of the grocery store with loved ones and strangers all around and the scan comes back....."Siri says it's Chris from that crazy week in Cabo when you asked me to identify "blumpkin"."

Maybe in authoritarian areas like Chicago where you cannot film the police otherwise the more ability for the general public to use such technology the less dangerous it will be to personal freedom.
