Maryland decides to tax residents when it rains

Yeah, just heard about this this morning so I haven't been able to investigate it to much yet. Personally I hope its just a joke that was started and the media just isn't seeing that it is....

O'Malley is a dunderhead....So glad I moved out of that state...But I miss the steamed crabs....

What about the air we breath?

Certainly that deserves a tax of some sort.

Let's call it the "respiratory usage fee."

If this is true then I wouldn't be surprised that some idiot tries an air tax...I can remember when people scoffed and laughed at this kind of "suggestion". Including me. .......I'm not laughing anymore.....

Just when I thought this state couldn't get any more stupid...

I really have to get the hell out of here... Anyone in a gun loving state need an accountant?

Already being attempted, it's called the carbon tax.

Yes....I could, but probably couldn't afford you....heh, heh....Anyway, we got out in '08, for South Carolina...Best move we ever made.

Morons continue to elect morons and yet express shock when they try to enact moronic laws. ;)

Yet another liberal gov't that simply asserts a need for ever more revenue and power.

Just think.

This guy is a big Democrat hope for president!!

Arrrrgh.

Maryland is my home state. I'm kinda saddened by this but not shocked that they would consider it.

IKR, Its been a while since I've been to California so it seems O'Malley wants to bring California to me!

Rep. Ed Orcutt of Washington state proposed just such a tax for bicyclists.

Sure is...One of my nieces is a huge progressive, and actually worked on the Obama campaign, and was in NC for the convention. She lives in MD, and thinks O'Malley, or as the locals call him M.O.M. is just the be all, end all, and thinks he is the real challenge to Hillary if she runs....

All I can do is shake my head. I am sure happy I do not live in Maryland. But this is what government has become. Taxing the weather, what else is up government's sleeve?

Pero, we probably really don't want to know! As a writer, I always believed that I have a healthy imagination, but I simply can't keep up with the wacky ideas some of them come up with! I wonder what the people in Maryland think, knowing that they have elected these people, and are paying their salaries? Maybe a poll is warranted.....

Most of them don't necessarily like it, but tend to shake their heads and go along with it anyway figuring that there is nothing they can do about it...Then come next election the machine roars to life, and the church vans go out to Balto city, hand out 'walkin' around money', and transport the homeless to the polls so the fix is in....

That's why I left....I predicted this crap...But I do miss the area....

Up here in Canada, we like the rain - good for the environment - helps the trees and plants grow, ripens the crops in the summer, fills the fresh water lakes, streams and resevoirs, helps wash the dirt off the streets and cleans out the sewers. The rain does disturb dirty sediments sometimes, but they settle down shortly after and all is good. Many states, like California, Nevada, Arizona, etc. want to buy water from Canada, have it piped down there - Maybe they could buy some of that nasty old rain from Maryland instead.

Good morning, j-mac! :2wave:

Their cooking is superb, especially their Maryland crab cakes! Yum...

Next time, instead of leaving, you stay and get rid of the idiots! win-win

Gotta love all the right-wing knee jerk reactions. If you actually read the link, it states the rationale for the tax - essentially the purpose is to raise funds to comply with an EPA directive to clean up the Chesapeake Bay, which, for those people who have never been to Maryland, is rather polluted and at the same time many residents are dependent on this body of water for their livelihoods. It's not the rain itself that's the problem, it's the surface runoff that results in pollution and erosion. This is exactly how Pigouvian taxes are supposed to work.

I'm sure my state government does a lot of dumb **** (assault weapons ban being one example) but this is not one of them. Take time to read and understand a topic before you start spewing bull**** "hurr durr they just be taxing people cuz it rains durrrr"

I doubt that hardly any would change their votes. Maryland is heavily Democratic and most people there vote party over candidate. This isn't knock on Maryland, most people fall into that category depending on the which state they are from. Both parties have most of the voters hoodwinked.
