No, when I was a child, I didn't hear about kids shooting their playmates either. It wasn't a gilded age--in the town in which I grew up, a bomb was set off at an elementary school by a crazy, killing several kids and teacher. Society has changed.
You didn't hear about much of anything ever because you were a child. If the bomb had gone off one state over you probably wouldn't have heard of it because you were a child and you probably didn't read the newspaper.
People got shot back then too, man.
