Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87 [W:113]

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

Coming from Germany, I mostly remember Thatcher as the woman who, without any necessity whatsoever, opposed German reunification. Her failiure to stop it is what she saw as the greatest defeat of her political life.

Well, it's over. Along the former inner German border, in the area between Kassel and Eisenach, there is a strip of land where nothing has been built since the fences, walls, and watch towers were torn down. Today it's basically a long stretched clearing in the middle of the forest, with wild flowers and bushes growing.

If I have the time, I'll get some flowers there and take them to her grave.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

RIP Prime Minister.

Unlike some of the people in this thread I was lucky enough to see her at work.

An amazing lady.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

Bookmarking this thread for the next time a liberal dies. Apparently tossing some of the vitriolic, most hateful things you can think up after a person dies because you disagree with their politics is what all the cool kids are doing nowadays.

If you want vitriolic and hateful, look at what Brits are saying on Twitter. This is subdued condolences by comparison.

"The only way they'll get a minute's silence is by asking for a round of applause!" is one of the kinder comments.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

To all four of you. If you want to discuss her legacy politically, start a thread. I always thought RIP threads were supposed to be respectful.

Jetboogieman: its politics. So partisanship is there no matter what you want to label it.
Higgins86: You are assuming I dont know. This is rather ignorant of you.
Andalublue: dunno, didnt see the thread or comment on it. Was pretty busy at that point
Moon: Maybe further than I would have gone, but sort of.

Word. I started this thread and it isn't an RIP thread, it's a BIH thread. All opinions welcome.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

My mums family were all miners. Good riddance

DING DONG

Yes, my relatives in England were involved in mining, although thankfully most of them had gotten out of it. She will not be mourned in the former mining areas of the UK.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

but she also paved the way towards the good friday agreement...

The Good Friday Agreement of 1998? Eight years after she left office? How so?

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

I don't need a chill pill, Jet. I've got an excellent bottle of Gran Reserva Rioja popped. It's party time!

You're not having a large glass of milk? (British Thatcher in-joke)

I stand corrected. I dont think its right how some are going about it but it is what it is.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

Listen ... Thatcher did a lot of good, but she also did a lot of crap. She will be remembered more for the crap than the good.

Her biggest mistakes was gutting the NHS and poll tax attempt.. those two ultimately cost her, her job. She also pushed the banking industry even more for London, which as we all know now, was not exactly a good thing. She also, like Cameron now, tried to push for class warfare.... a sickness that has for generation after generation held the UK back (and other nations).

Her biggest triumphs was the Falklands and breaking the union power in British society. The latter basically saved the UK from being the sick relative of Europe.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

Here's a quick game for all those getting butt-hurt about bad things being said of Thatcher. Here are 4 comments taken from either this thread, or the thread started in response to the death of Hugo Chavez, or the thread started about Nelson mandela's illness. See if you can tell which is which...

  • Good riddance to bad garbage - Gathomas88
  • The only thing s/he did was kill a bunch of people, many of which were innocent - Vendur
  • S/he's dead? Good! - Arbo
  • About time. - Anda

Anyone spot the difference in tone?

Me neither.

That was my first experience of being made unemployed by Thatcher. I was milk monitor.

Just the 'Progressives'.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

Considering Margaret Thatcher was America's staunchest ally and a dear friend of President Reagan and assisted him greatly in ending the cold war, I wonder who President Obama will send to her funeral.

Regardless of what you think/thought of her policies, she was a truly great lady and a prime example of what a woman leader could and should be.

And I would like to add :good_job: Mrs. Thatcher. R.I.P.

Listen, there's nothing to stop you starting an RIP thread if you want to commemorate her passing respectfully. I promise not to attend, but respectfully, I'm going to say what I think about the death of this ghastly, wicked woman. Sorry if it offends.

Anda, if you want to address me directly, do so.

As I said before, I probably wasnt even logging in around the time of the Chavez thread, and if I did, it wasnt something I cared about if I did.
TLDR: I didnt read it.

Carry on, but no rabbit punches.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

Sure seems that way. That kind of vitriol should be reserved for the truly evil, not for those we have political disagreements with.

Did you consider Ted Kennedy evil, by chance?

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

In Britain we're not as partisan as you.

This has less to do with the retarded Conservative - Liberal Universe you guys want to live in, in the states.

And more to do with her individual actions as Prime Minister.

Quoted for big-time truth. In that respect, Canadians are a lot like the Brits.

Your petty venality is indeed your own business, she's dead dude. That apology wasn't worth what it took to type it, its quite insincere.

True that. I don't feel the same about Heath, Major or Cameron. They were/are Conservatives, but behaved in an entirely different way when they were in power.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

Not exactly jumping, but I'm not mourning. The most divisive and destructive British politician of my lifetime. Good riddance.

I have been studying her the last week or so and I have to say I imagine your problem is that she just put people like you in your place. :D

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

The Good Friday Agreement of 1998? Eight years after she left office? How so?

To persuade the Irish government in Dublin to improve security co-operation and extradition arrangements, she signed the Anglo-Irish Agreement in 1985.
The Anglo-Irish Agreement was a substantial political achievement in many ways and helped to pave the way for the improved relationships that eventually gave birth to the peace process

"ENDA KENNY, IRISH TAOISEACH
While her period of office came at a challenging time for British-Irish relations, when the violent conflict in Northern Ireland was at its peak, Mrs Thatcher signed the Anglo-Irish Agreement which laid the foundation for improved North-South co-operation and ultimately the Good Friday Agreement."

You're not sorry if it offends, and there is obviously more respect for this "ghastly, wicked woman" than there is for you.

She was elected by the British more more than once and I strongly I doubt they support evil and wickedness. She made her mark on history going against the best the world had had to offer, whereas you just send anonymous hate mail to an obscure internet debate broad. Quite a substantial difference.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

I dont understand why so many of you have taken offence to Andy's position? Why should he respect someone in death that he hated in the world of the living? Andy lived in the UK during the 1980's and has earned an opinion on this subject doesnt matter if you agree with him or not.
