Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87 [W:113]

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

I disagreed with most of her policies as I think they did more harm than good, but there's no point in spitting on her grave because the Margaret who did those things faded away years ago. Her purpose was served and now she can rest.

If anything, her passing is yet another sign that her generation is starting to disappear and newer, more innovative thinkers can take over.

Yeah, like Sarah Palin, the true intellectual heir of Reagan's and Thatcher's knownothingism.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

About the Queen, but apropos of Thatcher and her "Falkland War Machine". The funniest SCTV bit ever.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

She was a horrible person. No wonder she and that other knownothing, Reagan, were "soulmates".

Don't leftists read books anymore?

If it's not TV comedy, or cartoons, or a movie, it's a song. Is pop culture their sole source of information?

Perhaps I just answered my own question.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

Never mind that she deliberately destroyed the manufacturing base in the UK and put no job replacement policies or re-training programs in place.
When she came into power, unemployment was around 5.5%, within just 3 years it had almost tripled to over 13%. Remember, this was a deliberate policy.

That's why they called her the iron lady. If you went on strike, you got the iron.

Any idea why she deliberately destroyed the manufacturing base?

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

It wasn't just the pits, it was vast swathes of the industry sector which were deliberately closed and she did nothing to help bring new jobs into the region or any re-training programs.

To be fully fair.. she had to do something. Those industries were only alive because of massive subsidies from the state. They were inefficient and using outdated worn down technology. And considering the state of the UK economy in the 1960-70s, she had no ability to fund a massive reorganization, efficiency and technology drive, so the only alternative was to pull the plaster so to say. When she took over, the UK was basically being run by the IMF and totally dependent on the goodwill of its creditors.

And she did somewhat replace the lost industries.. she stood up against the old boys network in the City of London and opened up the financial sector to external forces, and that basically created what we see as the City of London today and is was in fact responsible for the current conditions and what lead up to the financial crisis. Yes it was far from all her fault, but she did lay the ground work. She also created other industries by opening up the closed UK business society.. Vodafone for example, would never have existed if it was not for Maggie Thatcher. Granted even on this front she was also forced, by the EEC, who at its core had a plan of opening up markets across the EEC. So we will never really know if she actually wanted to do it or was just following the flow in Europe at the time.

This has resulted in the UK going from a failing industrial base based on government subsidies to a total dependence on a massive financial sector... not exactly a good thing when considering what happened to Cyprus and Iceland.

It was basically running on state subsidies and outdated technologies.

Which of course fails on the first point (the manufacturing base was NOT destroyerd - in fact it improved) and ignores the good things that came of her tenure.

Here's a good non-biased take on Thatcher's time in office.

Re: Baroness Thatcher dies, age 87

The simple fact is that Thatcher is far more popular in the United States than she is in the United Kingdom. Sort of like a reverse Barack Obama.

Thatcher was a polarizing influence on British politics, and in some parts of the UK - such as Scotland, Wales, and Northern England - there are more who revile her than revere her. That's another simple fact. Unemployment in those areas is still worse than in southern and central England.

And it should be remembered that it wasn't the left who ultimately got her out of office. It was her own party with an internal coup.

Pssst: Thatcher had Morrissey's flat in London searched when the song was released. One of the Bobbies asked the Moz to sign a CD of the album.

So obviously Thatcher couldn't tell the difference.

Exactly, the Tories kicked her out. She was becoming more and more extremist and weird. The common fate of all elected conservative officials.

I am noticing that the hard core libs, and progressives seem to hate her, which in my mind means she must have done something right.

It doesn't even rhyme!

Not only do you get your opinions from pop culture, it's pathetic pop culture!

Jesus, is this the lamest post of the month or what?

Just like Thatcher you seem to find in Morrissey everything you hate: a literate self-made man from the North who made laughingstocks of Tory knownothings (and who made more money!)

You mean a pissant wannabe that made his career by playing contrarian to popular figures of the time? Ah well, I suppose there's room for every taste or lack thereof.

Wow the hate is strong in this one. For a singer!

Meanwhile I suspect Thatcher and Reagan have been reunited -- in a very uncomfortabley place. They can play Cold Warriors in hell together.

No, hate is YOUR thing. I just don't think much of his music or believe he's all that with it in his commentary.

You'd be the last person I'd trust to make that judgement - too much hate.

I'm saddened to hear this news. IMO, whether one agrees or disagrees with her, she was a courageous leader who took on some very big issues. She refused to allow the NUM to break the British government and she refused to abandon her constituents in the distant Falkland Islands when the Falklands were invaded. Perhaps bigger than any other role, she played an instrumental role in a unique convergence of leaders (U.S., Soviet, German, and British) in helping engineer a peaceful end to the Cold War.

May she rest in peace.
