Ah, yes. The "with the way she was dressed she was just asking to be raped" argument. Poor Galtieri. He shamelessly started the Falklands conflict in order to boost his image, thinking Thatcher wouldn't do anything because she "was only a woman."

A contrversial political figure but I am still very sad to hear of her death.

In terms of some of the criticism labelled against her, it's often forgotten how idiotic some of the trade union leaders in Britain were back in the 1970's prior to Thatcher coming to power, and a lot of industry such as ship building and our car industry were on the wane due to lack of competitiveness and trade union politics. Ironically today our car industry is mainly foreign owned and is often a closed shop in terms of unions, whilst ship building already started to move to the Far East back in the 1970's. Today the vast majority of mass produced manufactured goods are made in China and the Far East, and mass produced manufacturing will aways go where goods can be produced cheapily. I certainly don't blame Thatcher for the plight of some parts of British Industry, and I think the same thing would have occurred who ever was in power, it was pretty much inevitable and part of the process of increased globalisation.

Thatcher was OK in my book. She was what we needed in the 80's. Ron-Ron had two primary allies back then to help him battle the Soviets: MT and Pope JP. Now, all three are gone. Time to move on.

Not that I often agree with PeteEU... but yeah. This. In the meantime, some of the rest of you in this thread (and you know who you are) your vitriol hurts no one but yourself.

I don't know much about Margaret Thatcher because she was in office before I was born.

She was indeed controversial, but she did not let her opponents intimidate her, and did not let people belittle her as weak just because she was a women.

"Spitting Image" was a satirical puppet show of the time, on which Ron was Bonzo's intellectual inferior. An incontinent moron with a removeable walnut brain, and a jelly-bean addiction. One memorable comment on their relationship saw Thatcher being seen off at the airport by Ron with a sickening French kiss, at which point he breaks away and leers into the camera with the words... "What a shame I'm only screwing her country!".

The nailed the Thatcher era with this show which went out the day she was elected.

Here's an excellent article that articulates a lot of what I feel about the death of Thatcher... apart from the bit about not cheering.

We are, today, as she made us. A paranoid, divided, mean-spirited nation, full of resentment, envy, greed and distrust. Racist, selfish, inhumane and tragically too stupid to see we are now nothing but turkeys lining up to continually vote for Christmas.
