The speed and deadliness of recent high-profile shootings have prompted police departments to recommend fleeing, hiding or fighting in the event of a mass attack, instead of remaining passive and waiting for help.

The shift represents a “sea change,” said Chuck Wexler, executive director of the Police Executive Research Forum, which recently held a meeting in Washington to discuss shootings like those in Newtown, Conn., and Aurora, Colo.

The traditional advice to the public has been “don’t get involved, call 911,” Mr. Wexler said, adding, “There’s a recognition in these ‘active shooter’ situations that there may be a need for citizens to act in a way that perhaps they haven’t been trained for or equipped to deal with.”

I don't know which is worse: That the previous advice of passivity was ever given...or the thought that anyone would take that advice.

But, for those who need to be told what to do, I'm glad they are now being told to ACT LIKE A HUMAN BEING!!.

Jezuz!!

Thanks Captain Obvious of the no **** division. Whoever gave this advice is probably the same guy who told the police to cordon off the area first instead of trying to hunt down and kill the shooter. Good thing that was corrected after the Ecole Polytechnique shooting.

I have a friend who went through workplace shooter training, and they were told to hide, run, and if all else fails confront.

IMO it should be 1. Shoot attacker. 2. Continue shooting until attack ceases.

I agree. The last thing the shooter would expect...mass resistance.

The requires civilian possession of an evil gun and, in many states, very expensive advance permission to carry it. That is my objection to "gun control" in general, it has little (if any) affect on criminal gun use as gun abusers are intent on breaking the law anyway, yet places further burdens upon any law abiding gun user.

Reminds me of a great book:

Unless one is armed, in my opinion it would take a miracle for teachers in a school to take down a shooter. Not like all the adults are gathered together. If I found myself in that situation, unarmed, I would run or hide or barricade. Ya' can't bring a knife to a gunfight. It never ends well.

Unless you use the knife before the fight. Can't use a gun if you had your throat slit or just stabbed to death. You could also work on police response.

Running and hiding is okay.

My impression is that the previous advice was to just huddle in a corner.
