What do you think? Will that calm North Korea, or will it rather foster its regime's impression they're with the back against the wall and there is just one way out -- war?
Lets look at China with our diplomatic glasses.

China is a supporter of the Iranian regime and has continued to do trade and business and investments in Iran, despite the fact that Iran is on the far end of the political ostracized spectrum.

China is starting to shake things up and agitate Japan and Taiwan, with the whole sea control thing and the islands.

Add to that the whole currency scandal that has been following China for the past years... and the human rights violations...

So there are already 4 black stains on its world reputation. Now, to add to that we have China being pretty much the only supporter of NK. What is the difference between NK, Iran, Japan and Taiwan? NK is the only nation that is very dependent on China. Iran doesn't need China more than China needs Iran and Japan, Taiwan and other nations that are at odds with China are well developed nations on which China has no dirt on. They can't force those countries to do anything because they are independent on China and have bigger and better friends (USA, the EU).

My guess is that China doesn't want to spread its political capital too thin. It wants to maintain a good relationship with power players around the world and a healthy image in the world. Having a stupid, loud neighbor that you're tied to in the public image hurts that. And if you can get him to be quiet... you may just earn the gratitude of many. So it pays off for China to put pressure on the young prick to shut up and take the credit on the public arena for that.

I wouldn't be surprised to see China as the string puller in this... testing the weakling we have at the helm to see what he and his administration would do. So far we have Kerry bending over.

I think the Chinese like it. I also don't think they're surprised by the US reaction.

Obama had 4-years to practice his naive foreign policy theory of "dialogue" and "engagement" with rogue regimes (ahem... without preconditions too boot). His record is pretty sheet poor.

The only way to deal with NK is to ignore them. They want money. Don't give it to them. Eventually they will shut up. To enter into a dialogue with them would be utter stupidity.

Why can't the UN leave them live their pathetic life is beyond me.
North Korea has never demonstrated any desire to "live their pathetic life in peace". They are stuck in a 1950s Korean War era posture and have not deviated from the position that the U.S. WANTS to attack them without notice. It's a paranoid existence chosen by 3 generations now and it shows no signs of letting up. They've been doing this for over 60 years and nobody alive in that country has ever lived any other way.

They will never stop what they are doing.

Iran was seeking to become a regional hegemon long before the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. North Korea has been engaging in threats and provocations since the Korean War ended in the 1950s. The pursuit of nuclear weapons or nuclear weapons capability very likely has less to do with negotiating leverage than with the ambitions of those states.

There will be one way out if NK chooses that route...... complete annihilation.

Re: China suddenly uses harsh tones towards North Korea

China is basically causing this situation by feeding aid to NK, so excuse me if I take these harsh remarks with a grain of salt. The NK problem is China's fault and nothing they say is going to make them look like the good cop. If they really cared they would enforce sanctions like the rest of the world and make plans to depose NK with a more sane dictator.

People would care a lot less about what NK is doing if it didn't always have an insane leader who is causing a huge humanitarian problem for his people. But that's what China wants... a calamity that is outwardly worse looking than their own so that people don't start poking their noses into China. It's what any paranoid capitalist-fascist state would do.
