Pastor Rick Warren's son commits suicide

Can someone please explain to me why this family's personal tragedy is anybody else's business, much less news?

I don't see anyone prying into his private life. He voluntarily shared the news.

Perhaps the doing more about mental illness is a relevant observation. Blaming guns is not.

Yes. Look away from the gun! It certainly can't be a factor here.

I have a loaded piece laying out on every coffeetable in the house. No one has shot themselves yet.

Yes, it can. If you're a parent reading this and have not lost a child, be grateful, so grateful, that all you can do is try to imagine. And suicide is particularly cruel--those left behind sometimes spend the rest of their lives wondering, "If only...." and blaming themselves.

My youngest brother killed himself in the summer of 2010.. I still hear his voice. .. saying my name. Its very difficult.. He was a wonderful man.. and a great friend to me .... and I still don't know why.

He left a message to his wife.. which she won't share with any of us.

But she is still the facebook/ twitter queen and taking cruises every month or two.

Suicide is a terrible thing.........

Then you are an irresponsible gun owner. You should take a gun safety class and accept some personal responsibility.

Yes, it is. And sometimes it's a terribly cruel thing. I hope your brother's wife will come around eventually and share what your brother said. Not knowing must be awful for you.

You mean because guns are dangerous and shouldn't be freely available to any yahoo?

Nope that is not what I mean. You are a reckless gun owner, so you are to blame if something happens, not some guy in Kansas who wants to go hunting, and you should be punished not him :2wave:

One question has to be why you have a "loaded piece" on every coffee table. Another is whether you want to divert this thread into one about gun control.

No doubt. Still processing too, sigh. Takes time to accept the unbelievable.

It's actually completely normal for people to be able to pull themselves together enough to write a coherent sentence or two in the midst of tragedy. It's not unreasonable for him to sit at a computer and type an e-mail to the church staff saying, "Hey, I'm probably not gonna be there this weekend...."

I have a lot of respect for Rick Warren. He's one of the evangelical preachers who are willing to let people have different opinions than he does. He also gave the prayer at Obama's '08 inauguration, how many evangelicals would have done that?

You seem to think I am criticizing Pastor Warren. I am not. I was commenting on something I hope you know nothing about first-hand.

Actually, I was agreeing with you and expanding upon what you said.

The Southern California church headed by popular evangelical Pastor Rick Warren says his 27-year-old son has committed suicide.

Warren's Saddleback Valley Community Church said in a statement that Matthew Warren had struggled with mental illness and deep depression throughout his life.

"Matthew was an incredibly kind, gentle and compassionate young man whose sweet spirit was encouragement and comfort to many," the statement said.

"Unfortunately, he also suffered from mental illness resulting in deep depression and suicidal thoughts. Despite the best health care available, this was an illness that was never fully controlled and the emotional pain resulted in his decision to take his life."

It is sad that the "best health care available" did not include keeping a gun away from him. He would be alive to day if they just did that one thing.

Given the knowledge, maybe his father should have done that for him.

Perhaps there were sleeping pills in the house, some rat poison or insecticide available.

Would you then blame his death on the sleeping pills and suggest something be done about it?

I was under the impression he shot himself. Either way, guns clearly wouldn't be an issue. They are very safe and everyone should have one on them at all times. Especially on planes, to discourage terrorists and such.

Other methods like pills are often unsuccessful so my statement still stands. He would most likely be alive today if not for that gun.

So many Monday-morning quarterbacks on this thread.

A "real" parent suffering "real" grief about something "so terrible" WOULDN'T be able to issue press releases. Period.......................

You claim to be an expert on who real parents are, and how parents should deal with such a loss?

Your post is despicable.

As for the preacher, I am sorry for his loss.

Yes, a despicable post. I feel so sorry for Matthew's parents, who spent what they thought was a very happy evening with their son (who did not live at home). So often once the decision is made, the person who kills himself does appear happy. Relieved is more like it, but this makes the suicide even more shocking to those left behind.

You are not a soothsayer.
