Judge strikes age restrictions for "morning after" pill

ummmm...it's a given when it comes to abortion topics.

This is about abortion?

I thought it was about an OTC emergency contraceptive.

I would feel better if the Judge set the minimum age at the legal age when a child becomes an adult. If a parent is still responsible for the minor, then the parent should be the one to okay the drug or not for their child.

It was set at age 17 which was the youngest the Obama administration had agreed to.
The judge over ruled the age limit.

It IS an abortion topic to some pro-lifers. Not to me, but is to the more militant pro-lifers as it can destroy a zygote.

again please see the post you quoted ;)

I wonder what the reasoning was when they originally set the age at 17? 17 is still a minor so this would indicate that any concerns over a parents right to know were never a factor in the first place.

What I see coming from this thread is FEAR!

F=Future

E=Events

A=Appearing

R=Real

There's always consequences for everything we do. Some are good, others are bad.

In order to solve a problem...a problem has to be clearly defined.

We can hypothesize potential problems - but that doesn't mean they'll happen.

I suspect that should the access to Plan B happen...I don't think the drug will sit on the isle next to aspirin.

In Texas we have to show ID and sign for certain types of drugs that use to be displayed openly for anyone to pick up...and without limitations on purchase quantities.

There became definable problems associated with those particular drugs. The solution was: Get appropriate ID, get a signature, and limit purchases. That information goes to a central database and will red flag a person who hops from drug store to drug store to acquire larger quantities.

In recent times we've had more and more reports that Tylenol can inflict serious physical damage and can even result in deaths. Yet...we see it openly sitting on counters.

No doubt there'll be a way to monitor Plan B's buyers and amount use...etc. Hopefully there'll be minimal damages caused by the use of the drug.

The fewer unwanted children and teenage mothers the better.

Unwanted children yes, but not necessarily teen age mothers.

You see, that is an issue the FDA should not be deciding. If the legislature wants to deal with that sort of thing then that is their thing. The FDA should be scientific in their evaluations of the effects of the drug. There should be no parental, religious, or personal objections for the FDA. The judge was right in smacking the FDA for their BS.

Perhaps for your kids, but I feel a parent should know what drugs and okay them when the child is a minor. You may be happy with that, I am not.

Okay, so your saying now any minor regardless of age can walking into a drug store and buy it. It seems to me the parent control and responsibility just went out the window on this this.

Judge orders morning-after pill available without prescription

Judge orders morning-after pill available without prescription - CNN.com

(CNN) -- A federal judge in Brooklyn, New York, has ordered the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to make the morning-after birth control pill available to people of any age without a prescription.The order overturned a 2011 decision by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to require a prescription for girls under 17.

Just wondering what everyone thinks about this. The past policy was that anyone under the age of 18 had to get a prescription for Plan B. Evidently with this court ruling they are mandating that it be completely OTC and that the FDA does not have the right to make it a prescription item for those under 18.

Re: Judge orders morning-after pill available without prescription

Requiring a prescription makes it effectively unavailable as an emergency measure. Which is the point of plan B. This is a correct decision.

I'm not opposed to the Morning After Pill, but making it available to minors, without a prescription? That's just nuts.

There is no barred access for adults. It's regulated for minors meaning that only minors need a prescription, or at least that was the case before the ruling.

This is the very best news I've heard this week. Hallelujah!!

Re: Judge orders morning-after pill available without prescription

I think it's a good move. I don't think kids should be having sex when they're under 16, but a lot of them are and I think they should be able to access Plan B immediately without bringing other people into it.

Re: Judge orders morning-after pill available without prescription

Just food for thought, but why should Plan B be completely OTC while routine birth control pills remain prescription only?

Re: Judge orders morning-after pill available without prescription

I think it's a good move, but I can't help but see some hypocrisy here. You can buy condoms, but you have to have a perscription for plan b? How do you justify being allowed to get condoms if you are under 18, but you can't get plan b w/out a perscription? Seems lame to me.

Re: Judge orders morning-after pill available without prescription

Everyone should be aware this is just personal bias going on here. If however I'm wrong I expect 99.9% of the things FDA does to be overturned by this judge. Otherwise, I'm calling bull****.

My guess would be side-effects of a routine birth control regime. And, there are contra-indications for use.

On is a piece of latex, and the other is a medication?

A condom is not a synthetic hormone based drug that interacts with the body. There is a major difference between something that physically prevents semen from being introduced and something that physiologically prevents ovulation. Regardless of if it should be OTC or not, condoms and Plan B cannot be rationally equated.

Condoms v. Plan B? So the comparison is a latex barrier that goes over a dick to a pill that can have serious side effects? Seriously? :lamo

Re: Judge orders morning-after pill available without prescription

Just food for thought, but why should Plan B be completely OTC while routine birth control pills remain prescription only?

Because proper birth control pills require a blood assay to understand the woman's hormone ratio, which is then taken into account when the pills are made in order to avoid causing hormone imbalances.

The morning after pill has no such requirement.

This court decision was a correct one. It makes no sense to limit it to adults when sexual activity for many begins before then. We may not approve of that fact but it is what it is.
