Judge strikes age restrictions for "morning after" pill

Re: Judge orders morning-after pill available without prescription

Condoms v. Plan B? So the comparison is a latex barrier that goes over a dick to a pill that can have serious side effects? Seriously? :lamo

Hey man it's totally unfair that I can buy sunblock without prescriptions but can't buy chemotherapy drugs...

Re: Judge orders morning-after pill available without prescription

A condom is not a synthetic hormone based drug that interacts with the body. There is a major difference between something that physically prevents semen from being introduced and something that physiologically prevents ovulation. Regardless of if it should be OTC or not, condoms and Plan B cannot be rationally equated.

I get what your saying, but I don't think it's any more severe then the drugs you already find in drug stores. Additionally, if you look at the risk of side effects for plan b, you'll see almost the exact same list for a latex allergy. One does not seem more or less dangerous then the other. Also, not all morning after pills affect ovulation. Some just prevent fertilization.

To me, if one is available without restriction, the other should be too. But that's just my personal opinion.

....and the line between parents and government is further blurred

You sure about that? Would you be comfortable taking Plan B daily?

Let the child have the pills, but follow them and arrest the person who was the reason for needing the pills. Seems fair to me.

Re: Judge orders morning-after pill available without prescription

The drug is already available to 11 year-olds on prescription, and is safer than many drugs prescribed to children "off label" where a drug is used on children even though it is only approved for adult use. The entire hullabaloo is being stirred up by those who would seek to continue the restriction of access to these drugs by women of all ages, who can now buy the morning after pill OTC without delay.

" ...The reader will observe that Secretary Sebelius did not
say that, “if not used properly,” levonorgestrel-based emergency contraception could have an
“adverse effect” on the youngest girls of reproductive age, nor did she include within that group
girls as young as 10. Indeed, the drug is currently available to the youngest girls of reproductive
age with a prescription.
This case is not about the potential misuse of Plan B by 11-year-olds. These emergency
contraceptives would be among the safest drugs sold over-the-counter, the number of 11-year-7
olds using these drugs is likely to be miniscule, the FDA permits drugs that it has found to be
unsafe for the pediatric population to be sold over-the-counter subject only to labeling
restrictions, and its point-of-sale restriction on this safe drug is likewise inconsistent with its
policy and the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act as it has been construed. Instead, the invocation of
the adverse effect of Plan B on 11-year-olds is an excuse to deprive the overwhelming majority
of women of their right to obtain contraceptives without unjustified and burdensome restrictions...."

Should minors be able to purchase Plan B?

The parents should be responsible for their childrens' upbringing, not the government. Bad decision by the court.

Oh noes, you have come down with DanaRhea syndrome.

I don't know what's right or wrong with this issue, but it sure makes a person feel sad about the depths to which our society has sunk when people are going to court so young teens can get abortion pills.

The minors thing was a figleaf for restricting access to women of all ages. Now that the drugs are available OTC where are the clamoring hordes of pregnant 11 year-olds going to get the 50 bucks to buy the pill?

If their mom's or dad's work for a Catholic institution, they'll get them free under the Obamacare Fluke provisions.

Yeah, it's almost as if we should educate young people about sexuality and its consquences. Wait, conservatives are against that.

Maybe it's better to just wish real hard that modern life will go away -- that's the tea party technique.

I have to agree with this.

Conservatives and anti-abortion activists poisoned the well (as usual) by their dishonesty. There's a genuine issue about making any type of drug available to minors, but the GOP and its hacks politicized this medical decision. As usual.

 tea party tea party tea party tea party

Wake me up if your mind ever escapes the rut.

They are against you educating young people about sexuality and its consequences? I was unaware they were against that.

Well I mean... It kinda is a medical decision and a medical issue considering it's a change in OTC policy and the need for a prescription.

It's not an abortion pill.

I doubt cost will be much of a burden and can see private organization funding free access.

Cant really comment on the remarks concerning safety. But it sounds like something that would require a prescription in any other circumstance.

just poll everyone on that and spay and neuter everyone who would pick choice #1.

I have a bad feeling about this one.

My concern is someone else putting it in a woman's food to cause losing a ZEF she wants or to prevent pregnancy to begin with - her not even knowing. People not only can go crazy to try to prevent an abortion, other people also can go crazy trying to terminate someone else's pregnancy.

I'd prefer it be 1.) be behind the counter and 2.) limited to sales to females and 3.) a record kept of anyone who buys it.

There also needs to be INTENSELY harsh laws passed about giving this to someone without the person's knowledge. Some men and some parents totally freak out learning their girlfriend, mistress or daughter is pregnant. I see potential problems. A women likely wouldn't even known why she lost the ZEF thinking it just a miscarriage. In regards to ZEFs, its like selling cyanide pills OTC. Just slip one to any woman and end a pregnancy she wants, but you don't, in the learn stage. Or even routinely without her knowledge to avoid it happening in the first place. There also is the question of what happens if someone takes a lot of them or slips someone a lot of them at the same time.

For those reasons I'm not fond of that ruling. Those all are not only very legitimate health concerns, but also assault concerns.

Umm...correct me if I am wrong but if I remember correctly Plan B only prevents the egg from attaching to the uterine wall, once its attached this pill does nothing. The woman wouldn't even know she was pregnant until well after that step is accomplished.
