President Obama plans to return 5 percent of his salary to the Treasury in solidarity with federal workers who are going to be furloughed as part of the budget cutting process known as sequester, an administration official said Wednesday. The voluntary move would be retroactive to March 1 and apply through the rest of the calendar year, the official said. The White House came up with the 5 percent figure to approximate the level of automatic spending cuts to non-defense federal agencies that took effect that day.
“The president has decided that to share in the sacrifice being made by public servants across the federal government that are affected by the sequester, he will contribute a portion of his salary back to the Treasury,” the official said.

Hey i guess thats pretty humble and pretty cool

I mean I'm not going to complain about salary reductions at the top levels of our government, but... whoop dee do?

5%!!!!!!. His generosity knows no bounds!!!!

Nice gesture from a guy who doesn't pay for anything anyways.

Pretty darn weak. The guy has made enough and will make enough after his presidency. He doesn't pay for food and lodging.

I would have been impressed if he'd refused his entire salary for the rest of his term...

What he's done is the equivalent of pissing on a house fire.

Pathetic.

Oh thank God. Everybody calm the F--- down. Obama got this. Now the deficit will be fixed and the debt will be paid off.

<sarcasm>

How bout he makes all the members of congress do the same?

Do that, and maybe I'll bend the ol' ear...

Meantime?

Empty gesture is empty.

I wonder if he'll include this as a deduction on his taxes next year to help offset the big tax increase from Obamacare.

Finally! We can feed all the starving children in Africa now! YES!

It's good he's doing this, however, government employees (at least DoD) employees I know are having to take a furlough day each week until September. That amounts to a 10% pay cut. Obama should do better than 5% IMO.

Edit: make that a 20% pay cut.

I think everybody in public office should take a pay cut, and I think Republicans should have done it first since their party complains the most about spending.

I really don't understand why anybody is attacking the president over this. As much as they have been telling us to sacrifice: pay more taxes, tighten our belts, learn to deal with budget cuts, ect. At least some figures in office are stepping up to the plate and making sacrifices themselves.

It's really perplexing to see some many of you complaining about this, when everybody in office should be doing it.

I think it's a good thing that he did it. I bet bonehead Boehner or clownazz McCain won't do the same thing. Lets see if ANY other politician will do the same. I really don't see any of the republicans doing it any time soon.

Because it's really not all that much of a sacrifice - $20,000. Once he leaves office he'll be taking hundred of thousands from us every year until he dies. That's in addition to the millions he'll make doing whatever it is he wants to do.

For the average American, it amounts to "here, let me buy you dinner" - a nice gesture unless you're announcing to the world "I feel your pain!" I am going to make sacrifices too! Let it be known to all that I'm buying someone dinner" (waits for applause).

LMFAO.. so 5% of 400k of his Presidential salary is 20k. When a GS-13 step 5 will lose 20% of their income which is roughly $16,000. Now the Government worker doesn't get these benefit either.. President's gets an additional 50,00 as an expense allowance, unlimited free room and board and this isn't including the money he brings in from private income. It's one big fact joke and you fell for it hook line and sinker.

Rand Paul returns money to the Treasury.

You guys would complain if he cured cancer, swore off golf, and guided White House Tours himself.

Oh, I think he is quite capable of curing cancer, but swearing off golf? Guiding WH tours? No way he would ever do that.

He can't "make" congress do anything. Article 1; US Constitution.

Because it's an empty and meaningless gesture.

Obama is twice the leader that Bloomberg is as mayor of NY; therefore, Obama should be paid double what Bloomberg gets from New York City.

How much fail does this idea have? It doesn't show solidarity because he is one of the people who cannot do their job and get a proper budget passed to pay people. It could be done a million times over and still would not be one percent of a trillion dollars. Obama will not have any problem paying his bills because the country won't let the power be turned out in the white house. Oh, and it will rightfully not get republicans to cut him a break. Great, it is the Rand Paul gesture.
