Conn. lawmakers unveil bipartisan gun control plan

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - With an announcement of sweeping proposals to curb gun violence, Connecticut lawmakers said they are hoping to send a message to Congress and other state legislators across the country: A bipartisan agreement on gun control is possible.Legislative leaders on Monday revealed proposals spurred by the Dec. 14 Newtown school shooting following weeks of bipartisan, closed-door negotiations. A vote is expected Wednesday in the General Assembly, where Democrats control both chambers, making passage all but assured.
"Democrats and Republicans were able to come to an agreement on a strong, comprehensive bill," said Senate President Donald E. Williams Jr., a Democrat from Brooklyn, who called the proposed legislation the strongest, most comprehensive bill in the country. "That is a message that should resound in 49 other states and in Washington, D.C. And the message is: We can get it done here and they should get it done in their respective states and nationally in Congress."
The massacre reignited the gun debate in the country and led to calls for increased gun control legislation on the federal and state levels. While some other states, including neighboring New York, have strengthened their gun laws, momentum has stalled in Congress, whose members were urged by President Barack Obama last week not to forget the shooting and to capitalize on the best chance in years to stem gun violence.
The Connecticut deal includes a ban on new high-capacity ammunition magazines like the ones used in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School that left 20 children and six educators dead. There are also new registration requirements for existing magazines that carry 10 or more bullets, something of a disappointment for some family members of Newtown victims who wanted an outright ban on the possession of all high-capacity magazines and traveled to the state Capitol on Monday to ask lawmakers for it.
The package also creates what lawmakers said is the nation's first statewide dangerous weapon offender registry, creates a new "ammunition eligibility certificate," imposes immediate universal background checks for all firearms sales, and extends the state's assault weapons ban to 100 new types of firearms and requires that a weapon have only one of several features in order to be banned.

New laws, more laws, endless laws....One note on this one, I find it problematic that legislators are targeting the sale of ammo. What say you about the new Conn. laws?

The idea of requiring "some criminals" to register with the state (for five years?) should be interesting. The idea of "registering" a magazine should also be interesting, since most bear no serial numbers. This "gun registration" seems to be the only new feature and naturally applies only to the law abiding gun owner. The SCOTUS will likely shoot this down since it appears to make it illegal to buy/sell what you can still legally own inside the state of CT. I am having difficulty finding the CT bill's full text, but have found a "summary":

Yeah, I don't see it anywhere either...I think that is because it isn't passed yet.

Official summaries from the state legislature website:

School Security and Mental Health were summarized in one page each, while it took four pages to summarize the Gun Laws...

Whether you tend to be for or against gun control measures, much of it is simply nonsensical. The only thing ammo certificates and magazine registrations will accomplish is to inconvenience law-abiding citizens. Your garden-variety maniac will simply purchase across state lines. A long walk in a state the size of CT.

Knee jerk reaction laws are always stupid. Just look at the patriot act as well. Hopefully this all gets struck down by SCOTUS.

I hope Stag Firearms and Colt pack up and leave and take those nice high paying blue collar jobs with them. Magpul already announced its leaving Colorado.

I wouldn't call a bunch of RINOs and democrats coming together to **** on the 2nd amendment to actually be bi-partisan.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

    Cicero Marcus Tullius
